Mototake Yoshi Photography Exhibition 'Space of Blue'
Artworks embody the artist’s thoughts, emotions, and aesthetic sensibilities. Their uniqueness arises not only from technical skill but from sincerity and authenticity of heart. Over seventeen years of photographing the sea, its color has gradually emerged within me like the hue of indigo dye.
Five years ago, encountering Lucio Fontana’s 'Concetto Spaziale' (Spatial Concept) revealed to me the power of abstraction—through 'emptiness'—to achieve spiritual freedom. This experience became the catalyst for establishing the theme 'Space of Blue.' Rooted in Eastern spirituality akin to Zen, which differs from Western notions of material reality, I have explored expression by delving into the inner self.
Indigo is a color nurtured by human hands over a long history, transforming when exposed to air, deepening in richness with each layer. Expressing indigo on Japanese paper embodies traditional Japanese beauty itself. All twenty-two works on display are created on handmade washi paper, where texture and negative space form the core of the expression. Using the primary tones of indigo dye, I abstract the sea, capturing the quiet spirituality dwelling between 'deep' and 'pale' shades.
Rather than seeking shock or trendiness, quietly conveying mystery, subtlety, and wabi-sabi—this is the essence of the exhibition.
(Number of works: 22 color prints)
