Hiroaki Okawara Photo Exhibition "shooting a life"

All food was once alive.

The "food" we eat every day.

All of it once had a definite heartbeat, a definite life.

Until now, I have continued to photograph the decisive moments of victory and defeat in sports.

It is a world where tension rises to its peak, and results are determined in an instant.

However, the time I spent facing nature in the mountains of Hokkaido contained a quality of tension entirely different from anything I had experienced before.

I accompanied Kuroda Mikio, author of "Hunt Eat Live" and a hunter, and witnessed over 20 hunting scenes.

When you enter the forest, sounds disappear. All attention converges on one point, and the air becomes taut.

The trigger is pulled, and the body of an Ezo deer weighing over 100 kilograms collapses onto the snow.

Amidst the swirling snow, I watched through my camera as life quietly fulfilled its role.

But hunting does not end in that instant.

Walking through the mountains searching for prey, skinning, dismembering, and carrying tens of kilograms of meat back down the mountain.

A long and arduous process continues, from when a living creature transforms into food.

Wild animals, hunters, and photographers.

In a scene where these three confront life head-on, I paused many times.

I want to rediscover the "obvious things" that have become invisible in modern society, and the very essence of living.

'shoot' Japanese translation: to shoot (a gun) / to photograph
