■ Exhibition Overview
From a young age, whenever TENGAone visited his grandfather's house in a town near a US military base, he was exposed to the American-style graffiti culture brought to Japan by stationed soldiers. Influenced by this, he stepped into the world of graffiti early on. In recent years, while depicting pop characters as 'portraits' symbolizing the confusion and contradictions of modern society, he has become widely known for his faux cardboard sculpture works, meticulously carved from wood to look exactly like cardboard.
When humans touch upon the sheer vitality and cycle of life itself, they experience a sensation that could be called sublime. Yet, at the same time, human beings live their daily lives enjoying food and consuming, almost completely unaware of this act. The weight of life and the desire to innocently enjoy it—these two seemingly contradictory concepts coexist at the root of human existence. In this exhibition, starting from the artist's own primal experiences, the composition centers on installations that allow viewers to relive that sensation, interspersed with flat artworks and sculptures.
■ Artist Statement
When I was a child, I grew up watching the sight of life turning into food ingredients at the food processing plant where my father worked.
It was a bit scary, but at the same time, it brought a strange sense of excitement.
Human labor and eating are deeply connected to life.
We live by receiving life.
This exhibition is an attempt to think about the value of life and the power to live.
■ Artist Profile
TENGAone
A street artist based in Tokyo. Since starting graffiti at the age of 14, he has continued to create across boundaries—from murals in commercial facilities and public spaces to sculptures and graphic design—with spray painting as his core medium. He has presented his work at solo exhibitions at Art Basel Hong Kong, Frieze New York, and Kaikai Kiki, as well as events like Roppongi Art Night. In 2019, he participated in the large-scale exhibition 'Beyond The Streets' in New York. He also participated in ComplexCon the same year.
