The leading cause of death in fatal accidents involving students at school is "sudden death."

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) has called for improvements in school crisis response capabilities, including the active use of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and AEDs, through guidelines such as the "Guidelines for Responding to School Accidents" (created in March 2016, revised in March 2024). Furthermore, the curriculum guidelines for junior and senior high schools, implemented from the 2021-2022 school year, explicitly state that instruction should be provided through practical training so that students can acquire primary life-saving skills, such as chest compressions and the use of an AED.

In Saitama City, following the tragic accident of Asuka Kirita, who suddenly collapsed and passed away during relay practice in September 2011, the city created the "Accident Response Text for Physical Education Activities, etc. – The ASUKA Model" and has been promoting consistent life-saving education starting from elementary school. Municipalities across the country are following Saitama City's lead in starting these initiatives from elementary school, and there is a steady increase in cases where the actions of students have saved the lives of family members and citizens.

In the first part of the forum, a public class on life-saving education (CPR and AED use) conducted by teachers will be held. In the second part, we will explore initiatives aimed at "zero sudden deaths in schools" through a symposium featuring medical and emergency professionals, school and board of education officials, representatives from MEXT, and parents.
