Philippines Mindanao Island Offshore Earthquake | We are working to save lives through support activities

On June 8, 2026, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 (Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology) occurred off the coast of Mindanao Island in the southern Philippines. Strong tremors were felt over a wide area, and reports from the scene indicate building collapses and damage, as well as evacuations from schools and commercial facilities.

There are also reports that in some schools, tremors occurred during morning ceremonies on the first day of the new school year, and students evacuated outdoors. The extent of the damage is still being assessed, and the number of casualties and building damage may increase rapidly in the future.

Aftershocks are also continuing. While praying for the safety of the local population, ADRA is contacting stakeholders in the affected areas to confirm the situation.

We have begun accepting emergency donations to deliver necessary support to those affected by this earthquake.

ADRA's Initiatives

ADRA established an emergency response system immediately after the earthquake occurred.

As of June 10, the emergency response unit, in collaboration with local networks and volunteers with whom we have ongoing cooperative relationships, is assessing the situation in the affected areas. The following support activities are anticipated in the future.

Based on current survey results and ongoing situation assessments, ADRA is considering the following support:

Distribution of emergency relief supplies

Shelter support

Provision of non-food items (NFIs) such as blankets and daily necessities

Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) support

Cash and voucher assistance

Psychosocial support
Protection support, including consideration for children, the elderly, and people with disabilities

In the affected areas, in addition to supporting families who have lost their homes, it is expected that there will be a need for safe water and sanitation, as well as support for rebuilding lives.
