Addlight Inc. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Tadaaki Kimura; hereinafter "Addlight"), which operates the co-creation platform "SUITz" for decarbonization and net-zero, hosts the "GX Alliance by SUITz" every month. This is a co-creation space that serves as a starting point for GX proof-of-concepts (PoCs) and commercialization through collaboration among government, academia, the private sector, and startups. The theme of the 5th event, to be held on Thursday, May 21, 2026, is "GX Through Forests." In the forestry, forestry industry, and timber sectors, while forests play multifaceted functions such as disaster prevention, climate change mitigation, and biodiversity conservation, structural issues have surfaced, including lack of maintenance, decline of mountain villages, shortage of workers, low productivity, and weak management foundations. Furthermore, expanding the use of domestic timber, reforming distribution, strengthening competitiveness, and utilizing biomass are also crucial themes. Sustainably utilizing forest resources while addressing these challenges holds the potential to lead to the realization of a decarbonized society through the promotion of GX and the revitalization of local economies. We have invited Mr. Shumpei Iida from the Planning Division of the Forestry Policy Department, Forestry Agency, as the main speaker to explain the potential of the forestry, forestry industry, timber industry, and GX. Japan's Forests and Forestry as "Important Carbon Assets Generating Economic Value" Japan's vast forests, which occupy about two-thirds (approx. 67%) of the national land, are expected to transform into a high value-added industry combining "biomass fuel," "wood-based materials (such as cellulose nanofibers)," and "carbon credits." In addition, the Japanese government has set a target of reducing greenhouse gases by 46% (compared to FY2013) by FY2030, and plans to cover approximately 38 million tons of CO2 annually through forest absorption. Aiming for decarbonization, operating companies, administrative bodies, and startups are taking initiatives leveraging their respective strengths. In the GX Business Co-creation Pitch, there will be presentations by a startup aiming for sustainable forest conservation through forestry regeneration, carbon absorption, and biodiversity evaluation by visualizing forests and improving management efficiency using drones, as well as initiatives by a specialized group of "forest makers" aiming for sustainable forest circulation and natural capital regeneration.
