Summer Vacation Travel Consciousness Survey 2026
Survey Period: June 15 (Mon) - June 16 (Tue), 2026 Valid Responses: 1,201 people *Varies by question Survey Method: Internet survey Target Audience: Men and women aged 20-49 residing in Japan
【Survey Results Summary】
1: For this summer's travel plans, over 70% of families with children in their 20s and 30s plan to travel. Among unmarried individuals, more people living alone plan to travel than those living with parents.
2: Domestic travel accounts for 70% of all travel destinations. Younger people are eager to travel to nearby overseas destinations (such as in Asia), while the demand for domestic travel (to nearby areas accessible by train or private car) increases with age.
3: For travel duration, 40% plan for 1 night and 2 days, and 30% for 2 nights and 3 days, suggesting the utilization of weekends and three-day weekends. Single-person households have a higher proportion of day trips compared to other household types, indicating a tendency to enjoy flexible travel.
4: Single-person households are more likely to travel alone than other household types, with half of single men planning solo trips.
5: The reasons for choosing solo travel are "I don't want to worry about anyone else," "I want to prioritize my hobbies," and "I like my own time." For those aged 40 and over, "I don't have anyone to travel with" becomes a more prominent reason.
The travel plans for this summer vacation showed significant differences depending on household type and age group. Among household types, families with children in their 20s and 30s were the most enthusiastic about travel, with over 70% responding that they plan to travel this summer. The significant decrease in the 40s is presumed to be due to children growing older and family trips decreasing because of extracurricular activities or studies. In contrast, among unmarried households, those living alone tend to be more proactive about travel than those living with parents, with a particularly high result of 79.4% among women in their 20s living alone. While the proportion of people traveling tends to decrease with age across all household types, among single individuals in their 40s, the difference between men and women widens to 31.2%. The lowest travel rate was 17.5% among women in their 40s living with parents.
Overall, domestic travel to nearby destinations accounted for the largest proportion at 36.8%, followed by domestic travel to distant locations at 31.7%, making domestic travel 68.5% of the total. By demographic, women in family households had very high overseas travel plans at 52.6% for those in their 20s and 38.5% for those in their 30s. This was followed by men in their 40s living alone at 35.2%, men in their 20s at 34.5%, and women in their 20s living alone at 33.0%. Among younger people, regardless of gender or household type, there is a high desire for overseas travel to nearby destinations such as Asia. Furthermore, the proportion of domestic travel to nearby destinations tends to increase with age across all demographics, except for single men, whose travel to distant domestic locations and overseas destinations increases with age. For women living with parents, domestic travel to nearby destinations accounted for over half of their trips from their 30s onwards, reaching 70.3% in their 40s.
For travel duration, 39.8% planned for 1 night and 2 days, and 29.3% for 2 nights and 3 days, indicating that trips utilizing weekends and three-day weekends are common. A notable trend is that single-person households have a higher proportion of day trips compared to other demographics. It is expected that many people are taking day trips even for "domestic travel to distant locations (traveling by plane or Shinkansen)" as indicated in Q2. This may be due to the recent rise in prices, making accommodation and travel expenses higher, leading people to choose day trips to avoid these costs. Additionally, the freedom unique to single-person households suggests a lifestyle that leverages their agility, opting for spontaneous day trips rather than extended overnight stays.
Solo travel (soro tabi), which has become common recently, shows that among those planning to travel, single-person households overwhelmingly travel alone compared to those living with parents or in families. In particular, over half of single men plan to travel alone in all age groups: 50.0% in their 20s, 58.2% in their 30s, and 54.5% in their 40s. Among single women in their 20s, over half (52.4%) also plan solo trips. This proportion remains around 10-20% for those living with parents and is extremely low, less than 10% for most age groups among families. Considering the high proportion of "day trips" among single-person households from the Q3 results, it suggests a low psychological barrier to acting alone and a tendency to enjoy traveling alone domestically and internationally according to their own schedules.
The top 3 reasons for choosing solo travel were "I don't want to worry about anyone else" (29.6%), "I want to spend time solely on my hobbies" (26.1%), and "I like my own time" (16.1%). While the desire to "spend time solely on my hobbies" to purely enjoy what they want to do was slightly higher among those in their 20s and 30s compared to those in their 40s, a characteristic trend is that the reason "I don't want to worry about anyone else" increases with age for both men and women. Additionally, the reason "I don't have anyone to travel with" increases among those in their 40s. This is presumed to be due to friends and acquaintances getting married or busy work schedules making it difficult to coordinate plans, leading to the choice of solo travel.
Recently, enjoying time alone, such as solo karaoke and solo yakiniku, in addition to solo travel, has become a trend. The results of this survey also show that over half of single men plan to enjoy solo travel, indicating that the freedom to enjoy one's own hobbies, fan activities, and other interests without worrying about companions is being prioritized. The perception of "alone time" among today's single-person households has shifted from the past negative images of "loneliness" and "sadness" to "a luxurious time to be enjoyed proactively." For single-person households, where "fulfillment of alone time" is an extension of their daily lives, these solo activity trends are not just a passing fad but are expected to diversify further and become established as a lifestyle.
