About Kobe Brick Warehouse

The Kobe Brick Warehouse was built in the late 1890s (around the 30th year of the Meiji era) and was used as a warehouse for cargo arriving at Kobe Port (such as shoes and electrical products) until 1987 (the 62nd year of the Showa era). Of the five buildings remaining at that time, the two located on the seaward side are the brick warehouses that still stand today.

As a rare existing brick warehouse, its exterior walls, built with English bricks using English bond, convey the appearance of the time as a building that supported the development of Kobe Port.

With the development of Kobe Harborland, the exterior walls of the brick warehouse were preserved on-site in 1990 (the 2nd year of the Heisei era), and the roof and interior were renovated, regenerating it as a commercial facility. In 2007 (the 19th year of the Heisei era), it was designated as a "Kobe City Designated Important Landscape Building" as one of the few remaining brick historic cultural assets in Kobe City, with the expectation that its exterior, which is in harmony with the waterfront, would be preserved.
