[About the Promulgation/Enforcement of the Constitution and Constitution Memorial Day]
The Constitution of Japan was promulgated on November 3, 1946, and came into force on May 3 of the following year. It defines the Emperor as the symbol of the state and establishes the fundamental principles of popular sovereignty, respect for fundamental human rights, and pacifism, while also providing for the renunciation of war, the separation of powers, the Diet as the highest organ of state power, and the guarantee of local autonomy.
On July 20, 1948, the 'Act on National Holidays' was promulgated and enforced. Under this law, May 3 was designated as 'Constitution Memorial Day' to commemorate the enforcement of the Constitution of Japan and to look forward to the nation's growth.
