Danish Artist Rikke Luther to Present Japan Premiere of Climate Science-Art Film and Artist Talk in Tokyo

Art Climate Collective Japan (ACCJ), operated by the NPO Arts Initiative Tokyo (AIT), will host "Green Study Meeting vol.11" on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, in Ginza, Tokyo. This study group focuses on the intersection of the climate crisis and artistic action.

Since 2023, the "Green Study Meeting" series has intermittently explored climate-related themes in the arts. For this 11th edition, AIT welcomes Danish artist and researcher Rikke Luther for the Japan premiere of her latest short essay non-fiction film, "Here’s… Mud In Your Eye" (2026), followed by an artist talk.

In recent years, ACCJ has been creating platforms for dialogue to explore a better future for the art sector through environmental consciousness. This includes supporting carbon footprint calculations, translating and providing resources on climate crisis responses, and organizing study groups and symposia. AIT believes that the imagination evoked by artistic expression is a vital force for changing social awareness and behavior.

Guest artist Rikke Luther is among the few global artists who continuously collaborate with scientists for research and production. Her works, including films and installations themed around Earth systems and climate change, have been featured in major biennials and triennials such as Venice, Manifesta, Sao Paulo, and Echigo-Tsumari.

The featured film, "Here’s… Mud In Your Eye," depicts the rapidly changing global environment and human efforts to understand these changes. Based on Luther's recent research on "mud" and sediments, it questions the relationship between science, physical sensation, and environmental shifts.

Luther first met AIT members in 2004 during a residency at the ARCUS Project in Ibaraki Prefecture. This event represents a continuation of a long-standing dialogue. In addition to the screening, Luther will participate in a talk to discuss how artists engage with scientific research to address the complex reality of the climate crisis.
