The Japan Shoga Kyosou Association (President: Calligrapher Kikyo, Office: Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture) will hold the '4th Japan Shoga Kyosou Association Exhibition' for four days from Thursday, July 23, 2026 to Sunday, July 26, 2026 at the Sakai City Cultural Hall Gallery (Sakai Alphonse Mucha Museum).
Past Exhibition Highlights
The core concept of this exhibition is 'casually enjoying the act of writing.' In the world of calligraphy, which is often perceived as exclusive, experience and skill are completely irrelevant. The exhibition aims to create an open art space where visitors can share the simple joy of 'picking up a brush or pen and writing characters' through artworks.
Simultaneously, within the same venue, the association's president and Sakai-based calligrapher Kikyo (Kikyo) will hold her 7th solo exhibition, 'Itto Shogu (A Single Lamp Illuminates a Corner).' The large-scale calligraphy work that was unveiled at last year's 'Osaka-Kansai Expo' will be publicly displayed for the first time in her hometown of Sakai. Admission is free, no reservation required, and photography and social media posting are allowed. This is an exhibition that anyone can casually visit, even while out for a walk.
Three Highlights of the Exhibition
[1] Concept: 'Casually enjoy writing.' Beginners and visitors with children are welcome!
Free admission, no reservation required. Photography and social media posting inside the venue are generally permitted. The exhibition offers a comfortable space where everyone can experience the pure joy of writing, free from judgments of 'good' or 'bad.'
[2] Relive the emotion of the Osaka-Kansai Expo. Experience up close a large-scale work measuring 3.6m x 1.8m!
The powerful calligraphy performance piece unveiled on stage at the Osaka Healthcare Pavilion returns to Sakai, one year after its debut. This is a rare opportunity to experience up close the dynamic energy and vitality of ink that cannot be conveyed through prints or screens.
[3] Calligrapher Kikyo will be present throughout the exhibition. Hear firsthand stories from international stages and behind-the-scenes of performances!
During the exhibition period, association instructors and the artist herself will be present almost all day. Visitors can hear not only the thoughts behind the displayed works but also exclusive stories from calligraphy performances in New York and Vietnam, and the intense backstage moments of the Expo performance—insights available nowhere else.
Concept: 'Casually enjoy writing'
Thanks to everyone's support, this exhibition marks its fifth year. Neither exhibitors nor visitors need any calligraphy experience. We aim to create a warm, open space where people can connect and share smiles through art. We warmly invite you to bring your family and friends and visit casually.
◆ Exhibition Content: From penmanship to dynamic calligraphy and painting works up to 360cm
The gallery will feature a diverse collection of works across four categories, ranging from penmanship that captures everyday beauty to calligraphy and painting as contemporary art that transcends tradition. Enjoy numerous examples of daily writing born from the shared spirit of 'enjoying the act of writing.'
Penmanship Division: All participants use ballpoint pens to write from the same model text. Despite identical characters, each person's individuality clearly emerges in these delicate and refined works.
Practical Calligraphy Division: Works featuring practical writing used in daily life, such as gift envelopes, addresses, and names. These pieces beautifully blend utility and artistry.
Calligraphy and Painting Division: Includes classical copied works as well as modern artistic expressions not bound by tradition. We will also introduce the creative background of each artist.
Student Division: Hard-pen and brush-pen works by middle school students and younger. The fresh, sincere energy of the next generation will enliven the exhibition space.
◆ Concurrent Event: 7th Solo Exhibition by Calligrapher Kikyo, 'Itto Shogu'
In the rear exhibition room of the same venue and during the same period, the 7th solo exhibition 'Itto Shogu' by Kikyo, president of the Japan Shoga Kyosou Association, will be held simultaneously. The theme 'Itto Shogu (A Single Lamp Illuminates a Corner)' signifies the dignity of shining one's brightest in one's current position and gently illuminating the surroundings. Following the pandemic, as the world takes new steps forward, this exhibition presents a world of calligraphy that radiates warmth. Experience a serene moment where ink, negative space, and the traces of the heart intersect.
As a highlight, the large-scale work unveiled alongside a calligraphy performance at last year's 'Osaka-Kansai Expo' will be displayed for the first time at this gallery. This is a rare opportunity to witness up close the power of calligraphy that once graced a global stage.
[Kikyo's Scheduled Attendance] July 23 (Thu) - July 26 (Sun): Expected to be present all day, throughout the exhibition period (Note: May temporarily step out for breaks, etc. Please understand in advance)
