KADOKAWA Corporation (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Tsuyoshi Natsuno) will publish "[New Edition] Stalingrad" (3,520 yen including tax) on Monday, March 30, 2026. Four years have passed since Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The psychological background of Russia's military actions, which is difficult to comprehend at first glance, is rooted in the trauma of this battle.

The "Battle of Stalingrad," the fiercest engagement of World War II, is the subject of this masterpiece. It is being reissued with a fresh look, having once been a global bestseller that laid bare the realities of that battlefield.

"A classic of war literature that conveys the misery of a chaotic battlefield with vivid intensity." -- Takeshi Oki (Modern Historian)

The German-Soviet War during World War II, which took on the appearance of a "war of annihilation" with over 30 million dead, remains in human history as a defining event. The Battle of Stalingrad (1942-43) was its watershed moment. Based on meticulous interviews with those involved in the fighting, this work reconstructs the reality of the battlefield and became the first global bestseller of the post-war era.

Through a group portrait of nameless soldiers struggling to survive on a front line covered in despair—such as Sergeant Gnotke, who witnessed the deaths of many comrades in a penal battalion; Colonel Vilshofen, who commanded a tank regiment under the reckless orders of his superiors; and the military doctor Hoot, who continued to operate on countless wounded soldiers without bandages or morphine—the theme of "what is war?" is thrust upon the reader. It is both a classic of war literature and a must-read for anyone discussing the German-Soviet War.

For this new edition, we have included frontispieces and maps that visually convey the nature of the battle, as well as a new commentary by modern historian Takeshi Oki, author of "The German-Soviet War," which won first place in the 2020 Shinsho Taisho awards.
