This session discussed the impact and potential of AI technology on modern society from multiple perspectives, including healthcare, energy, and policy.
Hiraoka participated in a panel discussion on "The Role of AI in Modern Society" and presented on the Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) problem and GramEye's initiatives. AMR is exacerbated by inappropriate antibiotic prescriptions and is predicted to claim 10 million lives annually by 2050. While its death toll and economic losses already surpass those of climate change, investment in countermeasures remains less than 1/300th of climate change efforts. Hiraoka stated, "There is a great opportunity to create solutions." He also shared that his experience researching antibiotic prescription practices in Thai pharmacies during his student days was the origin of GramEye. The medical device born from that research, "Micrium®," automates Gram staining and supports infectious disease diagnosis. It began sales in Japan in January 2025 and is currently implemented in approximately 25 facilities nationwide. He concluded by saying, "AMR cannot be solved by one country alone. I hope this STS forum will be a platform to accelerate global progress."
