ExtraBold Inc. (Headquarters: Toshima-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director: Yuji Hara; hereinafter ExtraBold) announced that it was responsible for the molding and production of car designer Takumi Yamamoto's exhibit (Room No. 22) at the 'TOKYO ROOMS' exhibition, using Toyota Auto Body Co., Ltd.'s eco-friendly material 'TABWD® (Tabwood)'.

In this project, ExtraBold's technical members carried out 3D data conversion (shape design, division, and joint design suitable for molding) based on Mr. Yamamoto's design image. Furthermore, ExtraBold consistently handled the entire process, utilizing its large-scale additive manufacturing machine (3D printer) 'EXF-12' and collaborative robot 3D printer 'REX-BUTLER'.

Background and Purpose

The 'TOKYO ROOMS' exhibition is held as a cross-sectional exhibition project covering space, furniture, and products. Takumi Yamamoto created and exhibited his work under the concept of 'shelves rising from walls / narratively showing the emergence of creation'.

ExtraBold's strength lies in manufacturing technology that supports the implementation of design expressions (data conversion, material selection, optimization of molding conditions, assembly design). In this project, by utilizing TABWD® (Tabwood), ExtraBold aimed to expand the possibilities of environmentally conscious expression and manufacturing.

Key Points of this Initiative

1) Utilization of Toyota Auto Body's 'TABWD® (Tabwood) (Wood Plastic)'

This work uses 'TABWD® (Tabwood)', an eco-friendly material provided by Toyota Auto Body Co., Ltd. By leveraging the material's characteristics, which combine the texture derived from wood with the processability of resin, ExtraBold challenged new textural expressions in the exhibition space.

2) From Design Image to Moldable 3D Data

Based on Mr. Yamamoto's concept sketches and spatial conditions, ExtraBold's technical members provided design support (3D data conversion) based on 3D printing, including the following:

* Division design considering molding size constraints, joint and positioning design
* Shape and configuration review anticipating risks such as warping during molding
* Organization of assemblability and workability assuming on-site delivery and installation

3) Production Support Fully Utilizing 'EXF-12' x 'REX-BUTLER'

ExtraBold's large-scale 3D printer 'EXF-12' (build area 1700×1300×1000mm) and collaborative robot 3D printer 'REX-BUTLER' were used to handle everything from material verification to final production. The optimization of molding conditions and processes was promoted in preparation for the exhibition period.

'When I received the offer to participate in the TOKYO ROOMS exhibition, I was exploring whether it would be possible to express the process where inspiration becomes a 2D sketch, and that sketch then rises into a 3D physical object, by outputting the entire wall surface with a large 3D printer. I was looking for a material that would allow free 3D expression while harmonizing with the interior space and other furniture. It was then that I encountered TABWD® (Tabwood). I was attracted by its unique texture, distinct from conventional materials, and its natural wood-like feel, and I was convinced that this material was optimal. I believe this exhibition would not have been possible without the cooperation of ExtraBold and TABWD® (Tabwood).'
