◆Special Ecological Commentary Limited to Care Day Week

Health Management of South Pacific Manta Rays

We will introduce the health management initiatives at our facility, focusing on the South Pacific manta ray, which is the only exhibit of its kind in Eastern Japan and is in its 19th year of care. We will explain their ecology, such as how they inhabit the coral reefs of warm seas and skillfully swim through complex terrain, as well as the characteristics of individual manta rays. Furthermore, we will introduce health management methods for South Pacific manta rays, which are usually difficult to weigh, by deriving estimated weight from the measurement of their interocular distance to determine feeding and medication amounts. On weekends and holidays, you can observe divers measuring them inside the tank.

This is a commentary event where we will clearly explain the management efforts and roles that care staff carry out daily. You can enjoy learning about the work of care that supports the lives of marine animals and the charm of South Pacific manta rays.
