The war in Iran and the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz are bringing about one of the largest energy crises for Japan and Asia since the post-war era. As Japan depends on the Middle East for the majority of its oil, much of which passes through this strait, the impact of supply disruption is extremely significant. This lecture will analyze the future of resource supply based on various war scenarios and examine the ripple effects on the oil, LNG, and coal markets, as well as the Asian economy. Furthermore, after reviewing data on climate change and decarbonization policies, the lecture will clarify the problems with Japan's energy policy, which has prioritized decarbonization, and state that a realistic policy shift centered on energy security is imperative, including diversification of supply sources, restarting nuclear power plants, and utilizing coal.
