〈Whisper of the Heart〉
A masterpiece of youth film released in theaters in 1995. The town of Seiseki Sakuragaoka, which served as the model for the story's setting, was for Hayao Miyazaki "not so much a landscape as myself living and existing within it." The director was Yoshifumi Kondo, an animator who also worked on "Future Boy Conan" (1978) and "Anne of Green Gables" (1979). The screenplay and storyboards were by Hayao Miyazaki.
This book primarily features scenes from the in-story work "The Story the Baron Gave Me," drawn by the protagonist Shizuku Tsukishima, and includes all 21 precious image boards and storyboards created by Hayao Miyazaki. It's a charming fantasy world added to the main story of "Whisper of the Heart," which depicts a girl's daily life, "to provide more service" to the audience.
"'Whisper of the Heart' is essentially a daily drama. But a daily drama alone doesn't appeal much to the audience. Mr. Miyazaki initially thought that to provide more service, fantasy elements should also be included. That's how 'Baron' came into the story." — From Toshio Suzuki's interview (included at the end of this book)

〈On Your Mark〉
A short animation created as a promotional video for CHAGE and ASKA's song, and later screened simultaneously with "Whisper of the Heart" during its theatrical release as the only "Ghibli Experimental Theater" work. It tells the story of two police officers living in a desolate world who encounter a winged girl and try to release her into the sky, passed down among fans as a little-known Miyazaki work. This work was reportedly made during a difficult period in the production of "Princess Mononoke" (1997). For Hayao Miyazaki, who "listened to the song well and had all the lyrics in his head," meticulously drawing the storyboards for "On Your Mark" was "a piece of cake" and a pleasure.
During the production process of this work, various methods were used for directing instructions, such as using enlarged and colored copies of storyboards in addition to regular storyboards. All 157 pieces conveying these experimental attempts are fully included.
"Regarding 'On Your Mark,' Mr. Miyazaki really listened to the song well and had all the lyrics in his head. Because of that, not only the storyboards but ultimately when he had to finish the picture storyboards, he had no hesitation. Because there was no need to do anything difficult at all. While drawing those picture storyboards, even if his hands were moving, his mind could think about other things. This was a good time to think about the structure of the new 'Princess Mononoke' while working on the 'On Your Mark' picture storyboards. At this point, meticulously drawing picture storyboards was 'a piece of cake' for Mr. Miyazaki." — From Toshio Suzuki's interview (included at the end of this book)
