Daimaru Shinsaibashi Store and Shinsaibashi PARCO jointly opened a new staff-exclusive refreshment room within the Shinsaibashi PARCO building on April 1st. The facility spans 60 tsubo (approx. 198 sqm), expanding the total break space across both Daimaru Shinsaibashi Store and Shinsaibashi PARCO by approximately 140%, and by about double for Shinsaibashi PARCO alone. Amidst the societal challenge of securing human resources, we aim to create an appealing work environment and support sales floors, also assisting our tenant companies' recruitment activities.

Creating an Environment to Support "Emotional Labor"

In recent years, "emotional labor," which requires communication involving emotions, has gained attention. This facility aims to support physical and mental recovery through both spatial design and event management. We strive to improve the quality of breaks by not only facilitating physical recovery but also naturally encouraging a change of pace and communication among staff members.

Furthermore, based on the needs of sales staff revealed in a survey, we will irregularly hold short, easy-to-participate events themed around "staff interaction," "psychological recovery," and "sales tips."

■Survey Period: February 2026

■Survey Target: 142 tenants in Shinsaibashi PARCO

■Survey Method: WEB questionnaire

Indeed, in a survey conducted among sales staff in February 2026, the most requested ES service for the facility was "充実した休憩スペース" (well-equipped break space), followed by "スタッフ同士のつながり" (connections among staff), "心理的充足・ウェルビーイング" (psychological fulfillment/well-being), and "販売スキルアップ" (sales skill improvement).

Although a minority, there was also a response for "販売スタッフでない自己の表現" (expression of self beyond sales staff), suggesting that creating opportunities for staff to show aspects of themselves outside of work might be a role for future break spaces.

*Emotional labor: Refers to all labor that requires emotional control in work. Generally applies to teachers, nurses, customer service, etc. Proposed by American sociologist A.R. Hochschild in her 1983 book 'The Managed Heart' (Japanese title: '管理される心ー感情が商品になるとき').

Spatial Design

For the spatial design, we collaborated with KOKUYO Co., Ltd., which has a proven track record in office space design. Utilizing their expertise cultivated in workplace environments, the space is balanced with areas for individual relaxation and spaces that encourage interaction among staff, allowing users to choose the optimal spot based on their condition at any given time.

Additionally, the round wall at the entrance was designed as a physical and psychological boundary to instantly switch between ON and OFF modes.
