Georg Jensen Hosts 'Weft by Georg Jensen' Exhibition to Celebrate the First Jewelry Collection by Creative Director Paula Gerbase

Georg Jensen held an exhibition at Frieze No.9 Cork Street in London from May 14 to 16. The exhibition celebrated the launch of 'Weft by Georg Jensen', the first jewelry collection under Creative Director Paula Gerbase. Honoring the brand's foundational materials, the collection features sterling silver chains inspired by the structure and history of textiles. The eponymous exhibition 'Weft by Georg Jensen' served as a space to explore these ideas in parallel, expanding them into the practice of contemporary art.

Honoring Craftsmanship

Gerbase curated artists who explore the creative process, the language of materials, and the reimagining of existing expressions and techniques. The exhibition featured six contemporary artists: Alison Wilding, Dan Coopey, Hellen Ascoli, Kira Freije, Maiko Tsutsumi, and Simone Griffin. It honored the philosophy that Georg Jensen has cherished since establishing its atelier in Copenhagen in 1904: an open approach to artistic expression rooted in a deep respect for exceptional craftsmanship.

Throughout its 122-year history, Georg Jensen has continuously supported creators who cross the boundaries between tradition and innovation. This is built upon a legacy of celebrating artists who offer contemporary reinterpretations of materials, techniques, and forms.

Creation of the 'Georg Jensen Contemporary Prize'

As part of this preview, Georg Jensen awarded an honorarium to each participating artist in recognition of their contribution to this monumental first step. This serves as the foundation for the upcoming 'Georg Jensen Contemporary Prize'. The inaugural edition of the prize is scheduled for 2027, with further details to be announced.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Alison Wilding (b. 1949, Blackburn, UK)

Represented by Alison Jacques Gallery, British sculptor Alison Wilding is known for abstract works that explore material, balance, and perception. Using a diverse range of materials including metal, wood, stone, rubber, and found objects, she creates sculptures that investigate tension, concealment, and shifts in perspective. Emerging during the 'New British Sculpture' movement of the 1980s, she is highly acclaimed as a prominent figure in contemporary British sculpture.

Dan Coopey (b. 1981, Stroud, UK)

Focusing primarily on sculpture and woven expressions, Dan Coopey is a contemporary artist who reinterprets traditional basket-weaving techniques while exploring materials, forms, and cultural meanings. He is represented by Corvi-Mora in London and Galeria Luisa Strina in São Paulo. Utilizing materials such as rattan, rope, sisal, plastic, and found objects, he creates abstract works that blur the lines between craft and contemporary sculpture. He examines the existence of the basket—a technique for shaping and organizing the world that has existed since ancient times but remains relevant today. Furthermore, his practice explores systems of production, utility, and display through complex forms situated somewhere between objects and architecture.

Hellen Ascoli (b. 1984, Guatemala City, Guatemala)
