The 856th Main Sale Auction
Mainichi Auctions, Inc. (Headquarters: Koto-ku, Tokyo; President & CEO: Toshihide Okazawa) will hold its Main Sale Auction on July 18, 2026 (Sat) at Hillside Forum in Daikanyama. Approximately 200 exquisite masterpieces from a wide range of genres, including Ukiyo-e, Japanese paintings, Western paintings, and contemporary art, will be gathered in one place.
The 856th Main Sale Auction
This auction will feature a curated selection of artworks spanning different eras and regions, from Edo period Ukiyo-e to modern Japanese art, post-war art, and even 20th-century European art. The lineup, where historical value intersects with contemporary sensibility, offers even first-time participants the joy of discovering "their own piece" and provides an opportunity to take a step from appreciation to ownership.
Kyuko Kataoka
One of the notable works is Kyuko Kataoka's "Crimson Fuji Soaring Among Clouds." With its powerful brushstrokes and unrestrained colors, this piece elevates Mt. Fuji into a unique form, a contemporary style that remains highly acclaimed even today, long after the artist's passing.
Another timeless masterpiece to be exhibited is Katsushika Hokusai's unique work "Kinoe no Ko Shinzu." This piece, renowned even among Hokusai's works, transcends the genre of Shunga and is globally recognized as a crystallization of the genius painter's exceptional imagination and expressive power.
In modern Western painting, Rei Kamoi's "Vanjou Playing" strongly reflects the artist's spirituality, which continuously observed human loneliness. Furthermore, unique works such as Kaoru Yamaguchi's "Horses in Harness," which pursued a poetic world of expression, and "Bredablick Tower (Skansen Open-Air Museum)," a European landscape by the wandering artist Kiyoshi Yamashita, will be displayed, allowing you to experience the diversity of Japanese art.
International works will also include masterpieces that convey the richness of Parisian culture, such as Maurice Utrillo's "Maison de Mimi Pinson, Montmartre" and Marie Laurencin's "Mlle. Marie-Laure de Noailles, as a Princess of the Theatre." Among these, the highlight is Bernard Buffet's "Blanche," a rare work where the artist's warm gaze watching over his niece resides within the tension of sharp lines.
