Shin-Mirai Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Junpei Asano), which operates under the mission of a "Sustainable Forest," will begin offering a limited release of its "Wood-specialized AI beta version" utilizing a vast timber database.

To commemorate this, a special event limited to 50 participants titled "How Spatial Designers and Artists Should Use AI" will be held at the Google for Startups Campus on Tuesday, May 26.

■ Background and Objectives

In Japanese forestry, it is often difficult to cover the costs of reforestation after logging solely through the income from primary felling. Without subsidies, it is an unsustainable structure where ensuring profitability is challenging.

One of the causes of these issues is the "information divide" in timber distribution.

Specifically, downstream users considering timber, such as architects and designers, find wood hard to use because it's unclear who to consult. Meanwhile, upstream forest owners and timber businesses cannot fully grasp demand trends, making it difficult to maximize the value of timber.

Aiming to realize its mission of a "Sustainable Forest" and to achieve sustainable timber utilization, Shin-Mirai has been developing a database that serves as the foundation for timber distribution.

Now entering its 10th term, with a highly enriched database, the company is advancing AI development to further promote the use and convenience of timber.

Ultimately, the goal is to create an environment where anyone can easily find the optimal options regardless of their specialized knowledge in forestry and timber, transforming wood into a more familiar and "easily chosen material."

■ About the Wood-Specialized AI Beta Version

1. Materialization of Ideas and Optimization of Search Terms

From user questions and reference images, it converts concepts into specialized terms necessary for considering timber—such as tree species, finishes, and applications—generating the optimal search keywords.

2. Proposing the Best Timber for Design Based on Vast Wood Information

Extracts information matching the design intent from Shin-Mirai's exclusively collected, massive timber database (specs, prices, delivery times, processing technologies, company information, cultural backgrounds, etc.). It also provides value-added information useful in practice, such as precautions for use and applicable subsidy systems.

3. Smoothing the Ordering and Delivery Process

Equipped with a function to summarize interactions (questions and answers) and utilize them directly for estimating and order requests. Because the consultation details can be shared seamlessly with Shin-Mirai's representatives, users can receive consistent support from the initial consideration through to delivery.

■ Future Development

Moving toward the official release, we will improve answer accuracy and expand timber information while receiving feedback from architects and designers. Additionally, we envision adding project management functions and developing features that can go beyond summarizing consultations to create full proposal documents.

Furthermore, in the future, we aim to expand information regarding LCA (impact on GHG emissions and biodiversity) and reforestation status, creating a state where users can select and purchase timber with a clear visualization of its impact on forests and ecosystems.
