About the Melon
Why does Ophisque du Soleil choose 'Iioka Takami Melon'?
A special high-class melon for summer only, worthy of the name 'Takami'.
'Takami Melon' is known as a high-quality melon with a 'precious taste' as its name suggests, written in kanji as '貴味(たかみ)メロン'. Among them, the one chosen by Ophisque du Soleil is the 'Iioka Takami Melon,' the first cultivation site. Of course, the deliciousness, but we were moved by the sight of producers who do not spare time and effort and cherish the way they grow.
Four promises of 'Iioka Takami Melon' that Ophisque du Soleil is obsessed with
'Sweetness with no misses' with a sugar content of 15 degrees or higher
Only those that have passed strict inspections by inspectors are shipped. The high sugar content and stable quality allow us to confidently say that there are 'no hits and misses' and is a major attraction of Iioka Takami Melon.
'The best ripening period' judged by professionals
Professional farmers confirm each melon for a slight sign (the ring of the separation layer around the stem) just before the fruit naturally separates from the branch when the sugar content has fully risen. They are harvested at the best timing.
'Lovingly' cultivated slowly like family
Starting with seed sowing in early February, seedling production, transplanting to the field, pollination by bees, fruiting, and then harvesting takes about half a year. During this time, we continue daily pruning work and temperature management without fail, and finally welcome the day of harvest. Like raising our own children, they are raised with plenty of love and time.
'Safe and secure quality' guarded by many people
As the harvest season approaches, inspectors visit the fields and check the condition of the fields directly with the producers. After confirming the sugar content inspection and cultivation records, only fields that meet the standards are allowed to be harvested. Furthermore, at the collection point, inspectors re-check for injuries and mold, etc., from melons packed in boxes by grade before shipping. Only melons with reliable quality that have passed through many strict eyes are delivered.
What moved us the most about this story was the deep affection of the producers for the melon. In fact, the sweets we create also have a sense of attachment to each one, and we cherish them like our own children. Therefore, we strongly wished to match the carefully raised melon with our precious sweets and chose the 'Iioka Takami Melon'.
Grower: Hideaki Ito
Hideaki Ito's dedicated way of growing
In the summer, soil disinfection is carried out to maintain strong tree vigor while carefully managing the melon trees so that they do not wilt. Pesticide spraying and foliar spraying are thoroughly carried out to prevent diseases while growing them healthily. During the harvest season, the ripeness of each melon is determined, and by harvesting in several batches, the best condition is determined.
In addition, instead of greenhouse cultivation, 'open-field cultivation' is adopted, utilizing the power of nature. The melons are grown using natural rain and no more watering than necessary.
Melons are fruits rich in water, but if too much water is given before harvest, the fruit will contain too much water, making it difficult for the sugar content to rise, and the taste and aroma may become blurred. On the other hand, by growing with water restricted, the melon tries to protect itself from drought, making it easier to store sugar and amino acids in the fruit. This physiological phenomenon is called 'water stress' and enhances sweetness and aroma, leading to a richer taste.
Through the combination of such blessings of nature and Ito's long-cultivated cultivation technology and thorough management, a delicious melon is born with umami concentrated in each one.
Surprisingly abundant juice and smooth flesh
Iioka's Takami melon, which grows by receiving plenty of the pleasant sea breeze of Kujuuri and the blessings of the sun.
In fact, our local area of Iioka in Chiba Prefecture is also known as the first region in Japan to produce Takami melons and boasts one of the highest quality in the country.
