New South Wing Family Mezzonette

Zagyosoh Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Ito City, Shizuoka Prefecture; President: Ei Kyosei) will fully renovate the South Wing of its hot spring inn, 'ABBA RESORTS IZU - Zagyosoh (Abba Resorts Izu Zagyosoh),' located in Ito City's Ukiyama Onsen Village, and open six new guest rooms in July 2026.

The new rooms draw inspiration from the waka poetry of Kakinomoto no Hitomaro in the Manyoshu, Japan's oldest poetry anthology, and the haiku of Yosa Buson. The poetic worldviews are intricately woven into the interior design, color schemes, traditional crafts, and artwork. These rooms elevate the act of staying overnight into a journey through Japanese culture—a new concept of 'staying within culture.'

Details of the renovated rooms are available here.

Background of the Renovation

Zagyosoh has long been committed to preserving and passing on Japan's traditional culture and hospitality to future generations and the world. This renovation introduces the new value proposition of 'staying within culture' rather than mere accommodation. The worldviews of the Manyoshu and haiku are integrated into room interiors and color palettes, with traditional crafts that embody Japanese aesthetics placed throughout the space.

New Room Concept

— A Journey Through Japanese Culture, Invited by Poetry —

Six new rooms themed around nature, light, and seasons celebrated in the Manyoshu and haiku, with the concept of 'staying within the world of waka poetry.' Elegant colors, delicate textures, and soft lighting harmonize to create serene spaces where traditional Japanese aesthetics meet modern sensibilities.

New South Wing Family Mezzonette and Suigetsu Villa guest rooms

New Room (1) Family Mezzonette (4 rooms total)

— Inspired by the Waka of Kakinomoto no Hitomaro

A two-story guest room inspired by the waka poetry of Kakinomoto no Hitomaro from the Manyoshu. Accommodating up to six guests, each room features an open-air bath. Based on fantastical imagery likening the night sky to the sea or forest, each of the four rooms expresses a unique worldview.

Botan (Peony): A fantastical space themed on peonies and the shifting stars. Fujibakama: An elegant and open space reminiscent of waves of clouds.

Mokusei (Osmanthus): A warm and healing space evoking moonlight. Rindo (Gentian): A refined space representing stars falling across a deep blue sky.

Traditional Crafts Integrated into the Rooms

Design elements inspired by traditional Japanese culture and crafts—such as kimonos, joinery, and Suruga bamboo thousand-strip work—are placed throughout the guest rooms. Handcrafted furnishings by artisans add depth and warmth to the poetic scenes.

New Room (2) Suigetsu Villa (2 rooms total)

— Inspired by the Haiku of Yosa Buson

A special suite inspired by Yosa Buson's haiku: 'On its own leaf, the moon appears hazy—the spring of bamboo.' Centered on the moon and bamboo, the room spatially recreates a tranquil scene of a bamboo grove deepening in green during autumn, illuminated by the soft light of a hazy moon. Ideal for stays of two to three guests, each room includes an open-air bath.

Chikuran: A dignified space evoking tall, upright bamboo, conveying stillness and vibrant life force. Tsukimisou: A serene space reflecting the gentle scene of moonlight, creating a quiet moment detached from the outside world.

Art Honoring the Classics

From interior design to art and furniture, a consistent worldview is maintained, elevating the classical scenes depicted in haiku into a modern expression. Each individual artwork placed within the space quietly narrates the serene story of the hazy moon and bamboo.
