Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1797–1861), a ukiyo-e artist active in the late Edo period, was known as the “Kuniyoshi of warrior prints,” a “great cat lover,” and a master of satire and humor. Yet his talents extended far beyond: when painting bijin-ga, he depicted stylish and vibrant women; when drawing yakusha-e (actor prints), he captured the distinctive features of popular kabuki actors; and when creating landscape prints, he incorporated Western artistic techniques for a fresh, innovative style. Devoting himself entirely to entertainment to delight his fellow Edo townspeople, Kuniyoshi consistently produced top-tier works across every genre—an undisputed super creator in the world of ukiyo-e.

This exhibition features not only ultra-famous works such as “Takiyasha the Witch at Omiwatari Palace,” “Mikake wa koha wi ga Tonda Ii Hito da,” and “Sono Mama Zuihitsu Nekogai Kō Gojūsan Hiki,” but also around 200 works that fully showcase his extraordinary talent, divided into six genres to clearly present Kuniyoshi’s diverse artistic achievements.
