In recent years, news about residential crimes such as robberies and burglaries has become increasingly common, raising public interest in home security. Particularly in summer, when people are more likely to leave their homes unattended for extended periods due to home visits or travel, And Reform conducted an online survey targeting 512 men and women across Japan to understand concerns about home security and the current state of preventive measures.

90.4% Feel Anxious About Home Security

The survey found that 90.4% of respondents feel some level of anxiety about home security.

This highlights that a significant majority of households are concerned about the safety of their homes.

85.0% Worry About Burglaries While Away

When asked whether they worry about burglary during short absences such as summer trips or family visits, 24.6% answered "very worried" and 60.4% answered "somewhat worried."

In total, 85.0% expressed concern about break-ins while they are away from home.

This suggests that security during prolonged absences is a pressing issue for many households.

Windows Are the Most Worrisome Entry Point (43.8%)

When asked about the most concerning entry points for intruders, "windows" received the highest response at 43.8%.

This was followed by "balconies and verandas" at 19.7% and "entrances" at 19.5%.

The number of responses for windows was more than double that of entrances, indicating that many people are particularly vigilant about break-ins through windows.

These results suggest that security measures around windows are just as important as those at the front door.

"Double Locking the Front Door" Is the Most Common Security Measure

When asked about current security practices, "double locking the front door" was the most common response, reported by 256 respondents.

Other popular measures included "window auxiliary locks," "shutters/storm shutters," "motion-sensor lights," and "security cameras."

However, 119 respondents said they are "not doing anything in particular," indicating that despite feeling anxious about security, many households have not taken concrete preventive actions.

Main Reason for Not Taking Security Measures: "Too Expensive"

When asked why they have not implemented sufficient security measures, the most common response was "because it's too expensive."

Other notable responses included "don't know what to do" and "difficult because I live in a rental property."

Although awareness of home security is high, financial constraints and lack of information appear to be major barriers to taking action.

Top Desired Future Security Measure: "Security Cameras"

When asked about security measures they would like to adopt in the future, "security cameras" received the highest number of responses at 241.

This was followed by "security glass," "motion-sensor lights," and "window auxiliary locks."

The popularity of security cameras suggests strong interest in measures that deter suspicious individuals and provide recorded evidence in case of an incident.

Additionally, since 43.8% of respondents identified windows as the most concerning entry point, interest in window-related security measures is also high. In fact, "security glass" ranked second among desired future measures, indicating growing demand for solutions that prevent break-ins through windows.

78.9% Say Media Reports Increased Their Security Awareness

The survey also found that awareness of home security is significantly influenced by social conditions and media coverage.
