Background and Social Significance

In recent years, with the remarkable advancements in AI, the promotion of international brain circulation has gained attention, and fostering international industry-academia collaboration and building networks with overseas researchers have become urgent priorities for strengthening Japan's scientific and technological competitiveness. However, information on Japanese researchers active overseas is dispersed across the websites of various universities and research institutions, as well as in論文 databases, making it a significant undertaking for company representatives and policymakers to simply ascertain "who is where," "who is doing what," and "how to connect."

KenQ-PI MAP was developed to resolve this "information asymmetry" and establish a new platform for science and technology. It aggregates and structures information released by public institutions and universities, providing it as an open database accessible to anyone for free. This is expected to facilitate the following applications:

Exploration of experts and collaborative research partners by corporate technology and R&D departments

Understanding of the overall picture of Japanese research talent abroad and international research trends by policymakers and administrative bodies

Searching for laboratories that could be candidates for further study or visits to overseas universities and research institutions

Industry-Academia Collaboration Services Provided by Our Company

BLUEZ & Company, Inc. operates "KenQ," an AI researcher search product that connects industry with research knowledge, as its core business. Based on information on approximately 130,000 researchers, "KenQ" uses AI to suggest optimal researcher candidates simply by inputting a company's technical challenges as keywords. We provide comprehensive support throughout the industry-academia collaboration process, from researcher search to matching and contact assistance, and promoting mutual understanding through workshops.

KenQ-PI MAP will be operated as an independent platform for visualizing overseas researcher information, while also striving to strengthen matching with researchers both domestically and internationally.

Message

"Japanese researchers active overseas are producing excellent research results amidst fierce international competition in their respective regions. However, their information is dispersed across various institutions and論文 databases, making it difficult to grasp the actual activities of Japanese researchers abroad from within Japan and create new collaboration opportunities.

To solve these challenges, we collaborated with the Consulate General of Japan in San Francisco and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) San Francisco Research Center to launch "PI Map" targeting the San Francisco Bay Area. Furthermore, by promoting collaboration with overseas diplomatic missions in various parts of the world, primarily through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, we are advancing the construction of a global science and technology network connecting Japanese researchers active overseas.

From the insights gained through this initiative, we recognize the importance of visualizing world-class scientific and technological talent and information, and creating new opportunities for international joint research and personnel exchange. We believe "KenQ-PI MAP" can become a practical resource that supports international collaboration across diverse sectors and further enhances Japan's scientific and technological capabilities and innovation capacity as a platform for efficiently searching and discovering Japanese researchers abroad, transcending regional and disciplinary boundaries."

Kazuhito Morioka, M.D., Ph.D. / Associate Professor, Orthopaedic Surgery, UCSF / Science and Technology Fellow, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Overseas Diplomatic Missions

"Japanese researchers active overseas are extremely valuable intellectual resources for industry. While some overseas diplomatic missions had already begun publicizing information, searching across regions or by theme was not easy, and we thought that improving its convenience would shorten the distance to research findings. With advice from Dr. Morioka, a Science and Technology Fellow at UCSF, we initially aimed to create a "map of Japan's research assets" that could be equally accessed by industry, academia, and researchers themselves. Going forward, we intend to work on continuous data updates, regional expansion, and the creation of mechanisms that foster "connections.""
