Bigbox Co., Ltd., celebrating its 40th anniversary specializing in log houses (Location: Utsunomiya City, Tochigi Prefecture, Representative Director: Daisuke Tezuka), conducted a survey on 'dream hobby rooms' targeting (1) those who own a hobby room and (2) those who are considering a hobby room.
In modern times, with more time spent at home, people often face the reality of 'being unable to concentrate due to family concerns' or 'having no place to put tools' when trying to enjoy hobbies at home.
There are also voices saying that it is difficult to switch to hobby mode when the living space is always in sight, such as in a corner of the living room or a bedroom.
What is gaining attention is the option of 'having your own hobby room' in a location separate from your home.
Therefore, Bigbox Co., Ltd. (https://www.fin-bigbox.com/) conducted a survey on 'dream hobby rooms' targeting (1) those who own a hobby room and (2) those who are considering a hobby room.

'Displaying collections' is the most common use for hobby rooms! What are the key points ofこだわり for hobby rooms...
First, when asked 'What do you use your hobby room for? For those who do not yet have a hobby room, what do you want to use it for?', the following results were obtained.
Those who own a hobby room
'Displaying collections (figures, books, art works, etc.) (48.6%)'
'Music appreciation (24.8%)'
'Exercise (home training, stretching, etc.) (24.0%)'
Those who are considering a hobby room
'Displaying collections (figures, books, art works, etc.) (44.8%)'
'Exercise (home training, stretching, etc.) (27.4%)'
'Work (DIY, plastic model making, etc.) (26.4%)'
Regardless of hobby room ownership status, 'displaying collections' was the most common, indicating a need to beautifully store and appreciate cherished items in a hobby room.
In addition, 'exercise' ranked high for both groups, and 'work' accounted for about 30% among those considering a hobby room.
It seems that many people are looking for a hobby room not just for appreciating collections, but also as an 'activity base' for moving their bodies without worrying about others' eyes, or for deeply immersing themselves in work.
So, how do those who already own a hobby room enjoy their hobbies? From here, we asked those who own a hobby room.
When asked 'How do you own your hobby room?', the most common response was 'reforming or redecorating a room within the house (73.1%)', followed by 'renting a room in an apartment near home (13.1%)' and 'building a new detached room or shed in the garden or on the premises of the house (11.3%)'.
With about 70% utilizing 'a room within the house', it was found that securing a hobby space through ingenuity is the mainstream.
On the other hand, a certain number of people are also preparing spaces separate from their homes, such as 'renting a nearby room' or 'building a detached room or shed in the garden'.
It seems that people are securing hobby rooms in various ways, but what is the level of satisfaction with the actual usability?
When asked 'How satisfied are you with your hobby room?', approximately 90% responded 'very satisfied (38.1%)' or 'somewhat satisfied (49.0%)'.
The majority responded that they are 'satisfied' with their hobby room, and seem satisfied with it as a space to enrich their hobbies.
So, what aspects of the hobby room do they want to improve to get closer to their ideal space?
When asked 'How do you want to improve your hobby room?', the most common response was 'widen the space to accommodate hobby items (37.5%)', followed by 'customize the interior to my liking (27.3%)' and 'eliminate the 'storage room' feel and make it a hobby space (25.6%)'.
The fact that 'widen the space' was the most common response suggests that as hobbies progress, tools and collections increase, and the current space becomes too small.
Also, 'interior customization' and 'eliminating the storage room feel' followed closely, indicating that people do not want the room to merely be a storage space, but also to look good.
