NTT-ME Corporation (Headquarters: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Kei Ikeda; hereinafter "NTT-ME") is preparing to launch a circular economy initiative that supports corporations and local governments in advancing carbon neutrality and strengthening BCP (Business Continuity Planning) through the use of reused electric vehicles (EVs).
This initiative was co-developed with EVolity Corporation (Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; President: Masaharu Amaike; hereinafter "EVolity"), a subsidiary of Marubeni Corporation (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Masayuki Omoto), leveraging EVolity's vehicle management system, and in collaboration with Dream Incubator Inc. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Takayuki Miyake; hereinafter "DI"). The program will enable users to apply for a low-cost, reliable EV solution this summer, featuring visible and guaranteed battery condition for reused EVs.
This solution not only supports corporations and local governments in implementing environmentally focused measures with sound economic rationale but also contributes to strengthening community-wide resilience by enabling the use of these EVs as mobile emergency power sources during disasters.
Background of the Initiative
In recent years, the environment surrounding corporations and local governments has changed significantly, with increasing demands for carbon neutrality, disaster resilience, and community contribution. However, several barriers have hindered EV adoption. New EVs tend to be expensive due to high battery costs and challenges in residual value formation. In the used vehicle market, concerns over battery degradation have prevented reused EVs from being properly valued, making it difficult to establish a robust domestic market.
As a result, many EVs that could still be effectively used are being exported overseas, leading to insufficient resource circulation within Japan.
Overview of the Initiative
To address these challenges, NTT-ME will implement the following measures:
1. Advancing Environmental Initiatives through Visualization and Assurance of Reused EV Battery Quality
By utilizing EVolity's service, which leverages battery analysis technology from Panasonic Holdings Corporation (Headquarters: Moriguchi, Osaka; President and CEO: Yuiki Kusuki; hereinafter "Panasonic"), the battery condition of reused EVs will be precisely visualized. NTT-ME will then provide quality assurance for these batteries, supporting corporations and local governments in achieving carbon neutrality through low-cost, reliable EVs.
Real-time visualization of SOH (State of Health) and location data will also support optimized operations for businesses and municipalities.
2. Strengthening Disaster Resilience through Use of EVs as Emergency Mobile Power Sources
By leveraging location data, the initiative will enable wide-area support based on vehicle availability during disasters.
NTT-ME will explore establishing a system allowing mutual sharing of emergency mobile power sources among participating users who support the initiative.
This will create a new resilience network that extends beyond individual corporate or municipal boundaries, enhancing regional disaster preparedness.
3. Promoting a Circular Economy Across the Entire Battery Lifecycle
For batteries no longer usable in vehicles, NTT-ME will explore repurposing (re-use) options such as stationary energy storage systems or portable batteries for disaster use.
Ultimately, battery materials will be recycled, aiming to achieve full resource circulation across the entire EV lifecycle—from deployment to disposal.
