Actress, UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund) Goodwill Ambassador. Born in Nogizaka, Tokyo.
Graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts, Department of Vocal Music, after attending Tomoe Gakuen and Kyoran Girls' School. Joined the NHK Broadcasting Troupe and became NHK's first exclusive television actress. Started the talk show "Tetsuko's Room" in 1976. In addition to appearing on television and radio, she established the Totto Foundation, a social welfare corporation, and focuses on training professional deaf actors, theatrical activities, and sign language classes. Her book "Totto-chan, the Little Girl at the Window" became a bestseller with 8 million copies sold. Member of the Japan P.E.N. Club. Director of Chihiro Art Museum (Tokyo/Azumino). Vice Chairman of the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. Honorary President of the Japan Panda Protection Association. Recipient of the Order of Culture in 2015.
