Daiki Axis Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture; President & CEO: Hiroki Oikame) has jointly produced Japan’s most entertaining educational workbook, 'Unko Drill: Living with Sewage – Purification Tank Edition,' with Bunkyosha Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Minato Ward, Tokyo; President & CEO: Shuji Yamamoto).
Through this booklet, we aim to convey in a fun and accessible way the role of 'purification tanks'—a water infrastructure usually hidden from view—and the mechanisms that protect our water environment.
Unko Drill: Living with Sewage – Purification Tank Edition (Supervised by Daiki Axis)
【Purification Tanks: The Invisible Backbone of Japan’s Water Environment】
The water from toilets and baths we use daily is properly treated before returning to nature. While 'sewer systems' are widely known for this purpose, they are not the only infrastructure supporting Japan’s water environment.
In many regions across Japan, sewer systems are difficult to install due to geographical or cost-related constraints. In such areas, 'purification tanks' treat household wastewater and contribute to preserving the water environment. Alongside sewer systems, purification tanks are vital water infrastructure. However, since they are installed underground, their functions and mechanisms remain largely unknown to the public.
This booklet was created to help children understand the water cycle and wastewater treatment processes in an easy-to-grasp manner, deepening their understanding of purification tanks as essential water infrastructure on par with sewer systems. The content encourages children to learn about the connection between daily life and the environment, fostering awareness of the importance of protecting water resources and interest in the infrastructure that supports society.
【Environmental Education Made Fun with 'Unko Drill'】
The story begins with the familiar characters 'Unko Inu' (Poop Dog) and 'Unko Neko' (Poop Cat) enjoying their peaceful daily lives—using toilets and taking baths. Suddenly, 'Unko Sensei' (Poop Teacher) appears and delivers a shocking revelation: 'Water continues its journey even after you use it!'
This leads children to discover the 'secret device' called a 'purification tank,' which cleans wastewater and returns it to nature in areas without sewer systems.
The booklet clearly and engagingly explains, in quiz format, how the 'purification tank'—hidden beneath the ground—cleans dirty water. Topics that may seem complex at first glance, such as 'the history of waste treatment' and 'how purification tanks clean water,' are presented with the humorous and lively approach unique to the Unko Drill series.
Beyond simply explaining mechanisms, the booklet concludes with a profound moral and social message: 'How you treat water reflects how you live your life.'
We hope this booklet helps children correctly understand how the water they use every day gets cleaned, serving as their first step toward actively thinking about water and global environmental issues. We also hope it raises awareness of the often-invisible role of purification tanks and the people who maintain them, inspiring children to become future stewards of the environment.
