A survey of 1,021 people nationwide on the reality of electricity bills and summer air conditioner usage (conducted by Erisgood).

Erisgood (https://starcraft-n.co.jp/erisgood/), operated by Starcraft Inc. (Headquarters: Toshima-ku, Tokyo, Representative Director: Daigo Nakakura), conducted an "Awareness Survey on Electricity Bills and Summer Air Conditioner Usage" targeting 1,021 men and women nationwide.

The survey investigated people's perceptions of household electricity bills and their air conditioner usage this summer, as government subsidies for electricity and gas are set to temporarily end with the usage period of January-March 2026, and are scheduled to resume for the summer (usage period of July-September).

*For the implementation and resumption schedule of electricity and gas price support, please refer to the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy, Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry's "Electricity and Gas Price Support" (https://denkigas-gekihenkanwa.go.jp/).

The results revealed that while 70.1% of respondents have experienced enduring air conditioning due to concerns about electricity bills, only a very small number have taken action to review their electricity provider or plan despite feeling anxious.

Survey Results Summary

The main points identified in this survey are the following five:

- Experienced "enduring air conditioning" due to electricity bill concerns: 70.1%

- Concerned about summer air conditioner costs: 92.4% / Anxious about future electricity bills: 81.4%

- After subsidy termination, electricity bills "increased" compared to the previous year: 66.7% (an increase of over 1,000 yen per month for 43.3%)

- Despite this, only 5.0% compared plans this summer, and 0.7% switched providers.

- 12.4% were unaware of the "subsidy termination" itself.

80% are worried about electricity bills, but only 1 in 20 (5.0%) take action to review their plans (Erisgood survey).

1. "A Summer of Enduring." 70% have experience refraining from using air conditioning due to electricity bills.

70.1% have experienced refraining from using air conditioning due to electricity bill concerns (Erisgood survey).

70.1% have "experienced" refraining from using air conditioning due to electricity bill concerns, while only 11.3% have "never" done so. The times they refrained were divided into morning, daytime, and nighttime, suggesting that the endurance extends to times that are actually high-risk for heatstroke.

2. Over 90% are "concerned" about summer air conditioner costs. Over 80% are "anxious" about future electricity bills.

Over 90% are "concerned" about summer air conditioner costs (92.4%) / Over 80% are "anxious" about future electricity bills (81.4%) (Erisgood survey).

92.4% are "concerned" about their air conditioner costs this summer, and 81.4% feel "anxious" about future electricity bills. The most important factor when using air conditioning is "electricity costs" at 36.7%, surpassing "heatstroke prevention" (26.4%). It's a summer where cost comes to mind before comfort or health.

3. In reality, electricity bills are increasing.

66.7% "increased" compared to the same month last year. An increase of over 1,000 yen per month was experienced by 43.3% (Erisgood survey).

63.0% feel their burden has "increased" after the subsidy ended. 66.7% responded that their bills had "increased" compared to the same month last year, with 43.3% experiencing an increase of over 1,000 yen per month.

On the other hand, 38.6% felt it was "almost as expected," indicating that rather than a sudden surge, the anticipated price increase is gradually taking its toll.

4. However, awareness of the "subsidy termination" itself is low.

Only 17.7% noticed the "discount notation" of the subsidy on their own (Erisgood survey).

Only 17.7% of people noticed on their own that the discount notation ("Electricity and Gas Price Support") on their meter reading slips or statements had disappeared after April.

Approximately 70% of people did not usually pay attention to the existence of the subsidy, and 12.4% responded that they "did not even know the subsidy had ended."

5. Despite significant anxiety, only 1 in 20 take action to review their plans.

16.2% want to "review" within 3 months. Half are passive (Erisgood survey).

Despite such high anxiety and interest, action is not following. Only 16.2% want to "review" (including those who have already reviewed) within the next 3 months, and half are passive.

Only 5.0% are comparing electricity providers and plans this summer. Even among those who felt their burden had "increased," only 6.7% actually took action.

Notably, the perceived increase in prices was similar for major providers and new electricity companies, but the rate of "decrease" was higher for new electricity companies (10.4%) than for major providers (6.0%).

Real Voices from Open-Ended Responses

- I was surprised that my electricity bill increased by nearly 1,000 yen, even though my electricity usage was the same as usual.

- I didn't know there was a subsidy. My electricity bill was indeed a bit higher than I expected after April.

- Since I have children, I can't really hold back on the air conditioning. I'm trying to save by using a fan in conjunction with it.

- I have a pet cat, so the air conditioner runs constantly in the summer. I can't compromise on the health of my beloved family.

Conclusion / From the Erisgood Editorial Department

This survey revealed a significant gap between anxiety and action, with 70% of people enduring air conditioning due to electricity bill concerns, while only 1 in 20 take action to review their contracts.

Enduring air conditioning is a constant risk of heatstroke.

Before enduring, by first reviewing "fixed costs" such as electricity provider and pricing plans, there is a possibility to reduce summer electricity bills without undue hardship.
