Sunshine City to Hold 5th Tug-of-War Tournament on May 27 to Promote Communication Among Office Tenants

Sunshine City Corporation, which operates Sunshine City in Toshima, Tokyo, will hold the 5th Sunshine City Tug-of-War Tournament on Wednesday, May 27, at Sunshine Plaza on the rooftop of the Alpa specialty shopping area. The sports event is designed to promote internal communication among office tenant companies and interaction between tenants. This year, the comedy duo Shizuru will serve as MCs, and an exhibition match will be held between the winning team and members of the Toshima Fire Station. By encouraging interaction across departments, job titles, generations, and company boundaries, the event aims to energize Ikebukuro while strengthening ties with the local community. Under the theme of building connections without relying on drinking gatherings, Sunshine City positions the event as a way to create new workplace value and cross-company relationships in the Reiwa era. As work styles and values have diversified since the COVID-19 pandemic, many companies are being asked to address questions such as the role of the office and how to improve communication within organizations. With the spread of remote work, employees within the same company have fewer opportunities to meet face to face, and relationships between people who do not directly work together, such as supervisors and subordinates, executives and younger employees, or frontline and back-office staff, are said to have weakened. Measures to prevent early turnover among new employees and to address declining engagement caused by insufficient communication have become especially important. In a 2025 survey of Sunshine City office tenants, many respondents also expressed interest in more opportunities for internal company exchange and interaction with other tenants. As the operator of one of Ikebukuro’s largest office buildings, Sunshine City planned this year’s tenant-company tug-of-war tournament as an opportunity for participants to reconsider the value of the workplace, including why people come to the office and what it means to come to Sunshine City. Through the previous four editions, participating companies reported benefits that exceeded expectations, including improved communication among employees, a stronger sense of unity from representing their company, and new connections with other companies in the same building. The event is also expected to have secondary disaster-prevention benefits. By creating face-to-face relationships among workers in the same building, Sunshine City staff, and the local fire department, coordination between tenants may become smoother in the event of a disaster. Sunshine City aims to make the tournament more than simple entertainment, presenting it as a model for building an office community that supports health and corporate culture. The event will take place from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May 27, with the opening ceremony beginning at 6:00 p.m. The venue is Sunshine Plaza on the rooftop of the Alpa specialty shopping area at Sunshine City, 3-1 Higashi-Ikebukuro, Toshima-ku, Tokyo. In case of rain, it will be held at Exhibition Hall D on the second floor of the Bunka Kaikan Building. A total of 25 teams from office tenants and related companies will participate. Each team must have at least eight members and include at least one woman. The MCs will be Shizuru, a comedy duo affiliated with Yoshimoto Kogyo. The event is hosted by Sunshine City Corporation, with sponsors including Sunshine City Prince Hotel, Toko Electrical Construction, Ichiran, Coca-Cola Bottlers Japan, Konica Minolta Planetarium, and Saison Asset Management, and cooperation from the nonprofit organization Tsunahiki to Tomodachi to. Enthusiasm among participating teams has been increasing every year. Some teams create a sense of unity by having both competitors and cheering squads wear matching uniforms. For the fifth edition, Sunshine City will also hold a team bracket lottery for the first time.
