Survey Results (Excerpt)
■ The biggest worry regarding old age and after death is 'burden on family'. Exceeds anxieties about money and health
About 1 in 3 people (33.9%) aged 50 and older chose 'whether I will cause a burden or trouble to my family' as their biggest worry regarding old age and after death. This far exceeded the 2nd place 'funds for old age' (17.2%) and 3rd place 'anxiety about health and physical strength' (11.7%), showing that the biggest anxiety for the senior generation is 'consideration for family' rather than 'money or health'.
■ As age increases, 'money anxiety' fades, and 'no worries' increases
Looking by age group, the percentage citing 'funds for old age' as their biggest anxiety drops to less than half in their 70s (10.0%) compared to their 50s (23.6%). On the other hand, 'burden on family' consistently ranks 1st across all age groups, which can be said to be a common psychology across generations.
■ The top preparation is 'consultation with close relatives'. However, 70% overall 'have done nothing yet'
When asked about their preparation status for end-of-life, an overwhelming majority of 70.1% answered 'have done nothing yet'. Among the prepared items, 'consulting with close relatives about old age and after death' (10.6%) and 'creating an ending note' (9.7%) followed, but both remained at around 10%. The gap between the magnitude of worry and the lack of preparation emerged as the biggest challenge in end-of-life planning for the senior generation.
■ About 40% of people in their 70s have started some preparation. The older the age group, the more action is taken
The percentage of 'have done nothing yet' decreases as age increases: 77.0% in 50s, 69.8% in 60s, and 60.7% in 70s. In their 70s, the percentages of 'creating an ending note' (14.2%) and 'creating a will' (7.6%) are higher than in other age groups, showing a tendency to move towards concrete preparation actions as they age. Even so, more than 60% of people in their 70s have not yet started, suggesting the need for information and support to encourage preparation.
Many people feel anxious about 'burdening their family'. However, the reality is that when it comes to actually preparing for end-of-life, they stall. While those in their 50s show particularly strong worries about money, their rate of starting preparations is the lowest among the generations. It seems that information and encouragement to take action early are required.
