Six domestic and international companies selected for "GREEN VALLEY SHIBUYA," a startup support program in the green tech field

Tokyu Land Corporation (Head Office: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Tatsuo Tanaka; hereinafter referred to as "Tokyu Land") has been selected as a partner for the "TOKYO SUTEAM" startup support initiative, hosted by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, in collaboration with Shibuya Startups Inc., Entrepreneur Roundtable Accelerator, and Nomura Research Institute, Ltd. This selection as a partner for the Reiwa 7 fiscal year initiative allows us to announce the selection of six domestic and international startups for the "GREEN VALLEY SHIBUYA" program, which supports the growth of global green tech startups. This program will run until March 2027, with demonstration experiments commencing this summer in various Tokyu Land assets and public spaces within the Greater Shibuya Area.

"GREEN VALLEY SHIBUYA" Selected Startups

From a large number of applications from domestic and international green tech startups, six companies were selected for their potential to tackle and make a significant impact on global urban environmental challenges. The selected startups will be provided with demonstration fields in public spaces and various Tokyu Land assets within the Greater Shibuya Area, along with opportunities for networking and fundraising with domestic and international investors and corporations.

※Greater Shibuya Area: An area within a radius of approximately 2.5 km from Shibuya Station, as defined by the Tokyu Group's Shibuya Town Development Strategy.

ChopValue Manufacturing Japan Co., Ltd. (Canada/Japan) [Circular Economy]

- Next-generation upcycled materials from used chopsticks

・ Business Overview: A business that upcycles used chopsticks by compressing and molding them into highly durable materials for furniture, etc.

・ Demonstration Content: A demonstration to allow visitors to experience the value of resource circulation by installing furniture upcycled from used chopsticks collected in the Shibuya area and having visitors use it.

・ Demonstration Content: Real-time display of heat index for Shibuya's buildings and streets on signage to visualize heatstroke risk, verifying visitors' safe and comfortable behavioral changes.

- Bioluminescent plants expected as next-generation light sources

・ Business Overview: Development of plants that emit their own light using bioluminescent genes, requiring no power and relying solely on photosynthesis.

・ Demonstration Content: Exhibition of bioluminescent plants in Shibuya spaces to verify the spatial design effects of light emitted by the plants themselves and visitors' acceptance of next-generation light sources.

- Sustainable "edible coffee"

・ Business Overview: Development of "edible coffee" made from whole coffee beans, finely ground to prevent waste of coffee grounds.

・ Demonstration Content: Collaboration with cafes in Shibuya to offer new menu items using "edible coffee," verifying visitors' taste evaluations and changes in environmental awareness.

- High-performance bio-composite materials utilizing agricultural waste

・ Business Overview: A business that converts and provides plant residues such as tea grounds into lightweight and highly durable composite materials.

・ Demonstration Content: A demonstration to allow visitors to experience the durability of new materials and the potential for reduced environmental impact by installing furniture made from tea grounds in Shibuya and having visitors use it.

- Next-generation water purification using AI and light

・ Business Overview: Development of photocatalysts for water purification that react to light using AI and quantum science.

・ Demonstration Content: Installation of an exhibit allowing real-time observation of how dirty water is purified by light, demonstrating the technology by allowing on-site experience of the process as water quality changes to clear.

"GREEN VALLEY SHIBUYA" Overview

This program selects promising domestic and international green tech startups tackling global environmental challenges and provides them with opportunities for demonstration experiments in the Greater Shibuya Area. Demonstration fields will include public spaces within the Greater Shibuya Area and various Tokyu Land assets (office buildings, commercial facilities, complex facilities, hotels, residences, etc.).

Furthermore, a contest will be held to showcase the demonstration results of the selected startups. The contest will invite renowned domestic and international researchers, entrepreneurs, and venture capital investors as judges, and will also invite overseas investors, thereby creating opportunities for networking and fundraising for the startups and supporting their further growth.

Tokyu Land's Startup Support

Tokyu Land is promoting the enhancement of area value and the creation of vibrancy through the co-creation of new industries and cutting-edge businesses with startups in the town development of the Greater Shibuya Area. We provide spaces that support startup growth, offer continuous investment support, and create opportunities for collaboration with various players in industry, government, and academia. Leveraging our communication power within the Greater Shibuya Area, we contribute to solving challenges faced by startups during their growth, such as providing opportunities for demonstration experiments, dissemination, and fundraising, thereby supporting their success.

In 2025, we will open "SAKURA DEEPTECH SHIBUYA (SDS)" within Shibuya Sakura Stage as a global innovation community hub for deep tech startups. We will implement a business co-creation program supervised by faculty from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and conduct demonstration experiments with domestic companies. We will also cooperate with program participants in the preliminary activities of the Cabinet Office's "Global Startup Campus Vision."

About the Startup Support Initiative "TOKYO SUTEAM"

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government formulated "Global Innovation with STARTUPS" in November 2022 as a strategy for startup promotion. Within this strategy, we have set the "10x10x10 Innovation Vision to Pioneer the Future" goal, aiming to increase the number of Tokyo-born unicorns, the number of startups in Tokyo, and the number of collaborative practices in Tokyo by tenfold within five years. To achieve this innovation vision, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government is implementing the "TOKYO SUTEAM" startup support initiative by various entities. Tokyu Land, as a supporting entity in collaboration with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, has been selected as a TOKYO SUTEAM partner and will develop startup support, leveraging our strengths in networks and fields, for approximately 1.5 years in principle, in collaboration with the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and other partner organizations.

Tokyu Land's Initiative in the Greater Shibuya Area "LIFE LAND SHIBUYA"

The Tokyu Group is focusing on the area within a radius of approximately 2.5 km centered on Shibuya Station, referred to as the Greater Shibuya Area. "LIFE LAND SHIBUYA" is the town development concept for the Greater Shibuya Area by the Tokyu Land Holdings Group. In this area where unique towns such as Shibuya, Harajuku, Omotesando, Yoyogi, Daikanyama, and Ebisu are adjacent, we are promoting town development centered on "people" to deliver excitement where "new" things are constantly born.
