"Koshoku Ichidai Otoko" — Japanese Culture from Kabukicho

This is a Japanese dance group formed by Smappa!Group hosts. It was established in June 2024, driven by the vision of Smappa!Group Chairman Maki Tezuka, who believes that "in Kabukicho, which was once planned to host the Kabuki-za theater, it is the role of hosts to become beings who can enjoy the culture and traditional performing arts of the entertainment district as a refined hobby." Under the guidance of Yamamura Wakashizuki, a master of Kamimai Yamamura-ryu, they have diligently practiced every week before work and have held two dance recitals (performances) to date.

The group name is derived from Ihara Saikaku's debut work and the origin of Ukiyo-zoshi, "Koshoku Ichidai Otoko" (1682). The name embodies the aspiration to become a refined person who has mastered elegance, much like Yonosuke, the greatest playboy in Japanese literature, on par with Hikaru Genji.

Highlights of this Performance — Three Pillars

[The First] The Aesthetics of Gap

Hosts who entertain guests in the night district now don kimonos and perform classical dances. The contrast between the image one has of a "host" and their graceful movements with a fan in hand is what makes this stage so interesting.

[The Second] The Power of Earnest Artistry, Built Through Practice Before Work

This is the result of diligent practice accumulated every week before work since June 2024. The earnestness of the hosts shines through as they tackle classical pieces head-on, such as "Urashima," "Nami no Ue," and "Matsuzukushi."

[The Third] The Inevitability of Kabukicho x Traditional Performing Arts

Kabukicho was once a place where the Kabuki-za theater was planned to be invited. For hosts to perform Japanese dance in Kabukicho is not a coincidence, but an inevitability unique to this town. Koshoku Ichidai Otoko aims to deliver a stage where anyone can easily experience traditional performing arts.

From Yamamura Wakashizuki, Master of Kamimai Yamamura-ryu

I am very pleased to be able to present Japanese dance in Kabukicho, a place where the Kabuki-za theater was once planned to be invited. The performers practice diligently every day. I hope everyone will come and see their efforts.

About Kamimai Yamamura-ryu

Koshoku Ichidai Otoko receives training from "Kamimai Yamamura-ryu." "Kamimai" is a form of "Jiuta-mai" (dance set to Jiuta songs), which includes various types such as "Honkyomono" derived from Noh, "Enmono" themed on love, and "Kokkeimono" featuring animals as protagonists. "Yamamura-ryu" is the oldest of the four Kamimai schools, founded in Osaka in 1806 during the Bunka era. Yamamura-ryu has deep ties to Noh and Ningyo Joruri, and has been widely practiced in households, especially among wealthy merchant women, as a form of etiquette training, particularly in the entertainment districts of Osaka. Junichiro Tanizaki's "The Makioka Sisters" also depicts the protagonist Taeko dancing to the Jiuta song "Yuki."
