Reviving Ancient Natural Perfumes with Ambergris: Lecture in Amami on June 28

Ambergris Japan (Nagoya, Aichi; CEO: Yasutaka Yoshida), which conducts appraisal, research, and promotion of Ambergris, will co-host a lecture and experience event titled 'Reviving Ancient Natural Perfumes with Ambergris' with the Amami Marine Exhibition Hall (Amami, Kagoshima) on Sunday, June 28, 2026, from 14:00 to 15:30.

The event will introduce how to identify Ambergris, its historical fragrance culture, and modern applications in natural perfumery through actual exhibits and scent trials.

Participants can experience Ambergris as a modern natural perfume using the company's 'Varivary' liberation brand, which features non-heated fragrances. Admission is free, no reservation is required, and walk-ins are welcome.

The 'Mystery Lump' Found on the Beach is One of the World's Finest Fragrances

Ambergris is a natural substance formed in the digestive tract of sperm whales. After being excreted, it drifts in the ocean for decades, developing its scent. Without knowledge, it is indistinguishable from trash when washed ashore. However, with the right perspective, it can lead to interest in beach cleanup, understanding of marine life, and utilization as a local cultural resource.

A piece of Ambergris (268g) found on an Okinawa beach was appraised by Ambergris Japan with an estimated retail value of 4.42 million yen.

Initiatives in Amami: Permanent Exhibition Reported on National News

In November 2025, Ambergris Japan donated Ambergris to Amami City. A permanent exhibition at the Amami Marine Exhibition Hall was launched and featured on NHK national news. The commemorative lecture was attended by about 80 people. This upcoming lecture is part of an effort to grow Amami into a 'place to encounter Ambergris' based on that exhibition.
