About Awa Wasanbon Sugar:
Wasanbon sugar is one of the few domestically produced sugars made using traditional methods in eastern Shikoku from a variety of sugarcane called Chikuto. In Tokushima, it is said to have been spread about 220 years ago by a practitioner named Tokuya Maruyama from Kamita Town. By the late 18th century, with the protection of the Tokushima Domain, Awa Wasanbon sugar gained high acclaim. The south-facing slopes around Kamita Town are suitable for sugarcane cultivation, and the area was once covered in sugarcane fields. With its elegant sweetness and rich flavor, Awa Wasanbon sugar has become an indispensable sweetener for high-end Japanese confectionery shops nationwide.
