Minority Share.com Inc. (Headquarters: Nerima-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director and Chairman: Yutaka Yamanaka; hereinafter referred to as "the Company") will co-host a reading session themed on "The Future of News" (by Satoshi Ishido) with the Nerima Political Study Group and the Civil Affairs Section 8 Monitoring Committee.
This book re-examines how we should engage with news in an era where newspapers, the internet, and social media coexist. According to Kobunsha Shinsho's introduction, this book is both a new media theory for the 2020s and a personal news theory based on the author's own experiences with both newspapers and the internet. The author does not abstractly discuss "Journalism" with a capital J, but rather starts from the question "What is good news?" and concretely examines the modern news environment, including changes in reporting, editing, distribution, and recipients.
A major feature of this book is that it does not simply pit newspapers against the internet, but rather explores the form of news that will be needed in the future, based on the strengths and limitations of each. Book reviews and introductions state that the core of this book is a comparative analysis based on the author's experience across old and new media, and the conception of "good news" beyond that. Despite acknowledging issues such as fake news, reduced reporting budgets, overemphasis on breaking news, and reader fragmentation, the book's significant appeal lies in its attempt to find a hopeful way for news to exist.
This reading session will primarily discuss the differences between newspapers and the internet, news credibility, the conditions for good news, the responsibility of recipients in the SNS era, and the future of media. It aims to be a valuable learning and dialogue platform for those interested in reporting, publishing, discourse, democracy, and internet society.
