Komatsu City, Ishikawa Prefecture (Mayor: Katsuei Miyahashi) has significantly expanded its "Ruby Roman" Furusato Nozei gift lineup starting from the 2026 season. In collaboration with Horiho Co., Ltd. (Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture), a fruit and vegetable wholesaler founded in 1878, the number of available specifications and units has been increased from previous offerings. This establishes a system to deliver Komatsu City-produced Ruby Roman grapes to a larger number of people.

As one of the prefecture's five major production areas, Komatsu City has been involved in the production of Ruby Roman since the brand's inception. This expansion allows donors to choose from large bunches of 500g or more, making Ishikawa Prefecture's "dream grapes" more accessible than ever through Furusato Nozei.

What is "Ruby Roman"?

"Ruby Roman" is an original grape variety developed by the Ishikawa Prefectural Agricultural Research Center over 14 years. Development began in 1995 by sowing about 400 seeds of the large-berried grape "Fujimino." The variety was registered in 2007 and first shipped in 2008.

Boasting berry size that is about twice that of Kyoho, a representative large-berried variety, it is among the top in Japan for red varieties. It is characterized by its subtle sweetness, low acidity, and abundant juice. Strict shipping standards are in place for weight, sugar content (18 degrees or higher), and color. Only a very small portion of the production meets these standards, making it an extremely rare variety.

In Ishikawa Prefecture, producers in Komatsu City, Kaga City, Kanazawa City, Kahoku City, Hakui City, and Nanao City, along with the JA Group and the prefecture, are working together as the "Ruby Roman Club" to manage quality and establish the brand. Komatsu City and JA Komatsu have been a key production area since the club's founding.
