Proposing Homes Equipped with 'Preparation Spaces' and 'Calm-Down Areas'

Cosmos Initia, a Daiwa House Group company, announced the completion of three renovated apartments that incorporate the concept of inclusive design. In this initiative, the company learned from the lives of children with developmental characteristics and their families to incorporate 'preparation spaces' where schedules and belongings can be visually organized before going out, and 'calm-down areas' where one can spend time alone when feeling overwhelmed, aiming to create homes that address the daily difficulties faced by diverse individuals. Inclusive design is not about 'designing for as many people as possible,' but rather a way of thinking that focuses on the difficulties and discomforts of each individual that have often been overlooked, and re-examining environments and services based on those voices. In this initiative, by deepening the study starting from the difficulties and sensory characteristics seen in the daily lives of children with developmental characteristics and their families—an area where social understanding has been advancing in recent years—the company has visualized issues that were difficult to manifest in conventional housing. Designs born from this approach are characterized not only by ease of use for as many people as possible, but also by leading to improved comfort and peace of mind for specific individuals.
