Final Report on the Tripartite Collaboration between Sakai City, NTT West, and the Graduate School of Project Design
On March 26, the final day of activities for the "Mikuni Minato Co-creation Project Research," a program to train personnel to work on tourism promotion and regional revitalization in and around the atmospheric port town of Mikuni-cho, Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture, a final presentation by 12 researchers was held at the Mikuni Branch of the City Society of Commerce and Industry in Mikuni-cho. The 12 male and female researchers from inside and outside the prefecture presented their own well-developed measures to revitalize the Mikuni Minato area after 20 lectures and workshops starting last August, and a presentation full of ideas unfolded.
This project research was hosted by Sakai City and operated by the Graduate School of Project Design (Headquarters: Tokyo) based on a comprehensive partnership agreement signed in July by Sakai City, NTT West, and the Graduate School of Project Design. Mikuni Minato was a port of call for Kitamaebune ships that boasted prosperity during the Edo period, and its location at the mouth of the Kuzuryu River made it a logistics hub since ancient times, preserving its prosperity in its atmospheric streets. In addition, the "Mikuni Festival," in which giant warrior dolls parade through the city streets, is a famous feature of the town. Recently, however, the declining birthrate and aging population have led to an increase in vacant houses in the old town, and how to revitalize the town while making use of the townscape has become a major issue.
