Wakayama City is the prefectural capital located in the northern part of Wakayama Prefecture, situated within an hour from central Osaka and Kansai International Airport. During the Edo period, it was ruled by the Kishu Tokugawa clan, one of the Gosanke (three privileged branches of the Tokugawa family), producing shoguns such as Tokugawa Yoshimune. It boasts numerous historical spots, including its former residence, Wakayama Castle, and 'Waka-no-Ura, the sacred land of Waka poetry', composed by the Man'yoshu poet Yamabe no Akahito. With a mild climate throughout the year, Wakayama City flows with a peaceful time that is 'not too urban, not too rural'.
