Planning Purpose
This is the sixth installment of a performance series that explores expressive activities centered on music, unconstrained by genres or stereotypes. The artist for this edition is Masahiko Takeda, who is based in Kyoto and creates works traversing a wide range of fields including electroacoustic music, performing arts, contemporary art, and traditional crafts.
This work is a performance centered on three concepts of 'oru' (weaving, folding, and being present), set against the history of a family business of Nishijin brocade that could not be inherited. 'Weaving' is an act of connecting fragments and weaving continuity, and at the same time, it is a process of establishing new relationships while incorporating gaps and disconnections.
In this work, elements such as sound, voice, scent, body, and arrangement are not presented as completed expressions, but rather the conditions and relationships that give rise to them are arranged on stage. Using the aesthetics of 'arrangement' in the tea ceremony, time structures such as repetition and spacing found in Gagaku (traditional Japanese court music), and decentralized compositional concepts akin to John Cage and Erik Satie as clues, a stage where performers, audience, and space mutually influence each other is conceptualized.
Things lost in history and things no longer used are expressed and brought to life in the present age through the above methods. Through the performance, a space will be created that serves as a temporary loom for events to be quietly woven together.
What is Sound Around?
Started in 2021, this is a series introducing performances by artists who engage in expressive activities centered on 'music,' unconstrained by genres or stereotypes. Every year, in collaboration with new artists, performances are produced and presented that deconstruct existing music genres, question all frameworks when playing and appreciating music, and fundamentally rethink the relationship between us and 'music' from the periphery and margins.
The first edition welcomed the composer and performer unit 'Imaike Project' as hosts, and proposed new ways to enjoy music through performances involving the body and voice under the theme of 'voice/words' restricted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
The second edition welcomed the up-and-coming unit 'Shojiki,' who perform sound performances using motors and curing tape. Under the theme of 'improvisation/change,' they presented an installation of sounds born from chance and constantly changing.
The third edition focused on 'composition.' Featuring Koshiro Hino as the main artist, it re-examined the core concept of 'composition' from the moment sound is born until it reaches people as music.
The fourth edition marked the series' first attempt to openly recruit performers regardless of knowledge or experience. Through workshops led by Yuko Araki, they explored the boundaries of 'sound/music' surrounding us under the theme of 'Genshi' (Primitive/Atom/Vision).
The fifth edition featured artist Miyu Hosoi as a 'world telephone operator,' communicating in real-time with various parts of the world. It reconsidered the uncommunicated things left behind by the ability to communicate, and the impossibility of mutual understanding.
