Continuous Events! Suntory Hall 40th Anniversary Project

Suntory Hall (Location: Minato-ku, Tokyo; Director: Tsutomu Tsutsui), a public interest incorporated foundation Suntory Foundation for Arts, will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2026.

Opened on October 12, 1986, as Tokyo's first dedicated concert hall with the aim of achieving the "world's most beautiful sound," it has since implemented creative and high-quality self-planned performances, education activities focused on inheriting and developing music culture, and various initiatives as an open hall. As one of Japan's leading concert halls, it has received high praise and support from many classical music fans and artists both domestically and internationally. Since its opening, approximately 21,000 performances have been held, attracting a total of 23.04 million visitors (as of the end of October 2025).

To commemorate its 40th anniversary, a diverse range of activities are being rolled out over 11 months, from April 1, 2026, to February 28, 2027.

Luxurious performances by top artists from Japan and abroad will be featured, including the "Chamber Music Garden" chamber music festival celebrating its 15th anniversary (June 5-20, 24 performances in total), a revival of Suntory Hall's completely original work, the critically acclaimed Hall Opera® Tan Dun: "TEA - A Mirror of Soul" after 20 years (July 3 & 4), the contemporary festival "Summer Festival" continuing since 1987 (August 22-30, 7 performances in total), the main anniversary event, the "40th Anniversary Gala Concert" (October 31 & November 1), and the "Vienna Philharmonic Week in Japan 2026" conducted by maestro Riccardo Muti, who celebrates his 85th birthday. Furthermore, Japan's first regular orchestral concert series for children, "Kodomo Teiki Enso-kai (Children's Regular Concerts)," will reach its 100th performance in December 2026. This year also marks a new developmental start, focusing on nurturing next-generation performers, centered around the "Suntory Hall Academy (Opera & Chamber Music)." On February 28, 2027, the "Suntory Hall Academy Gala - This Moment Shapes the Future -" will be held, bringing together current students and alumni from both the opera and chamber music academies who are excelling domestically and internationally. In addition to these "sponsored/co-sponsored performances," carefully selected 40th Anniversary "participating performances" will be added to the annual lineup.

■ Pipe Organ 40th Anniversary Commissioned "New Work" Appearance

The pipe organ installed at the entrance of Suntory Hall has delivered splendid tones to visitors and the local community since its opening in 1986.

This year, to commemorate the milestone of its 40th anniversary, a new work has been commissioned from Shinichiro Ikebe, one of Japan's leading composers and a recent recipient of the 2025 Japan Art Academy Award, in addition to the beloved repertoire played to date. The fanfare for the hall, connecting audiences with music, will finally debut in June. Please look forward to this new melody that will resonate in future memories.

Since its opening in 1986, we have nurtured music by world-class artists together with audiences who love music. The rich future of music is born from moments where the lives of performers and listeners shine together. The future of Suntory Hall begins now, here. — The key message, "Moments that Shape the Future," embodies this sentiment.
