The "Oki Hikigyo" event, the most exciting event of the "63rd Grand Ise Shrine Shikinen Sengu" scheduled for Reiwa 15 (2033), will be held from Reiwa 8 (2026) to Reiwa 9 (2027). The "Oki Hikigyo" is a folk event in Ise where sacred timber to be used for the new shrine buildings is dedicated to the Shrine. Among the many events, it is one of the few that citizens can participate in.

The first phase of the Oki Hikigyo, the "Okabiki" (land pulling), was held for 15 days every weekend from May 9 to June 13. A total of approximately 57,900 people, including citizens and Shinto devotees from all over the country, participated, bringing even greater excitement to the city of Ise.

Overview of the Oki Hikigyo (Miki Hikishoshiki, Okabiki) Event

Content: A special Oki Hikigyo event where representative sacred timber for the main and branch shrines of Ise Grand Shrine is pulled into the shrine precincts.

In Ise city, the Naiku-ryo Hekidan (devotee group) pulled 10 pieces of sacred timber with 20 groups, and the Geku-ryo Hekidan pulled 7 pieces of sacred timber with 9 groups.

In the Okabiki event this time, many celebrities participated, including Nanase Aikawa, Ise-Shima Ambassador; Jike from Batteries, Mie Oinai Navigator; and Suzuran Ise from Angerme, Ise SNS Tourism Ambassador.

As a joint project by Ise City, Mie Prefecture, and the Ise-Shima Tourism Convention Organization, reports and videos summarizing the events of the Oki Hikigyo have been produced and are available on the special website.

This time, people of different ages, genders, and fields of activity shared their thoughts on the Oki Hikigyo and the charm of Ise from their respective perspectives. Many comments were received about the fervor and sense of unity during the Oki Hikigyo, with common sentiments of感動 (deep emotion) expressed regarding "achieving the event by synchronizing with those around them" and "being a part of the long history passed down from ancient times."

Furthermore, some reports also introduce notable spots in Ise-Shima that were visited in conjunction with the event.

[Ise City x TOKYO FM Joint Project "Blue Ocean" Ise City Special - Journey to Ise Shrine's Reiwa 15 Sengu]

Future Schedule

Following the Okabiki, the "Kawabiiki" (river pulling), where sacred timber is pulled from the clear Isumi River to the inner shrine and shrine grounds, will be held from July to August.

The dates are July 25-26 and August 1-2, for a total of 4 days, with pulling by 20 local Hekidan groups. The sight of them pulling sacred timber into the river, dressed in happi coats representing their respective towns, offers a different spectacle from the Okabiki. Please pay attention to the Reiwa era "Kawabiiki" that continues the traditions of each group.
