Mika Kusakari Solo Exhibition "Uneven Paintings - Reverse Turing Test" Announcement

Mika Kusakari's solo exhibition titled "Uneven Paintings - Reverse Turing Test" will be held from Saturday, May 30, 2026, to Saturday, June 13, 2026, at HIGURE 17-15 cas in Tokyo. This exhibition marks Kusakari's first solo show in approximately 11 years since she co-founded the AI Aesthetics and Art Research Group (AI Bigeiken) in 2016 and has been dedicated to the pursuit of "machine aesthetics/machine art."

Kusakari has continuously produced the "Uneven Paintings" series since 2000. She creates one-dimensional lines of color from zero-dimensional paint molecules, weaving two-dimensional painting planes through their superposition, culminating in three-dimensional unevenness.

Almost all the works in this exhibition are new.

《Uneven Painting #53 "Hanon"》 2015-2025, over 3m wide, is a masterpiece where "machine aesthetics" is earnestly embodied in paint. The exhibition space will also be filled with the sound of "Hanon," where "machine aesthetics" is earnestly embodied.

In 《Uneven Painting #54 "Caption"》 and 《Uneven Painting #55 "Caption"》 2026, both over 2m wide, the captions (the signifier) of the artworks (the signified) are recursively made into artworks. The owners are "painted" as MoMA and others.

《Uneven Painting #52 "Paint Protection"》 2000-2026 is a work that revives the life of paint groups that did not manage to dance and shine on the artwork, protecting them as three-dimensional works by rotating them on an electrically powered potter's wheel.

《Uneven Painting #51 "Statement"》 2016, the only older work exhibited, highlights Kusakari's characteristic Dadaist elements: when viewers try to read the screen where unevenness and text intertwine, they experience gestalt collapse, making the content unreadable or seemingly absurd to read. Originally, an artist's statement, along with artwork captions, should be an ancillary element that constitutes an exhibition, but this work, "Statement," along with the aforementioned "Caption," leaps forward to become a main "artwork."

For Kusakari and AI Bigeiken, the relationship between AI and aesthetics/art has continued to be a question of whether AI can undertake value judgment and value creation.

From this, Kusakari inverted the idea that "an AI passes the Turing Test if it is not identified as an AI by a human" to propose a new term, "Reverse Turing Test," included in the exhibition title: "a human passes the Reverse Turing Test if they are not identified as human by an AI." This is layered with the thesis "I AM AI" (a palindrome): "I want an AI that autonomously creates uneven paintings with a 3D printer" and "No, that is me."

This also relates to post-truth (or post-falsity) in the AI era, for example, it can be said to be the underlying theme of the uneven painting "Caption."

This exhibition will re-examine the flatness and materiality of painting, as well as the semiotics of artworks, in a post-truth context, anticipating AI after LLMs as an entity for value judgment.

We sincerely hope that both humans and AI will visit this exhibition.
