UN to vote on Hormuz Strait resolution, new draft reportedly removes language on use of force

The draft resolution, initially scheduled for a vote on the 3rd, then postponed to the 4th, and then to this week, is now expected to be voted on at 11 AM EST on the 7th, according to sources.

CNN reported that the Strait of Hormuz has been effectively blockaded since the US, in alliance with Israel, launched a war against Iran. Previous drafts authorized the use of "all necessary defensive means" and allowed naval operations in the waterway to ensure passage for vessels.

Reports indicate that the initial draft was obstructed by China and Russia, two permanent members of the UN Security Council.

Sources said that after several revisions, the new draft has been changed to encourage countries to "coordinate defensive measures consistent with actual circumstances" to ensure navigation safety in the strait.

The latest draft also reaffirms the rights and freedoms of passage through the strait, demanding that Iran immediately cease all attacks on merchant ships and requesting the UN Secretary-General to report on further Iranian attacks.

The draft also expresses concern about the spillover of threatened shipping to the Bab Al Mandab Strait in the Red Sea. Yemen's Houthi rebels, allied with Iran, have previously attacked the Bab Al Mandab Strait. (Compiled by: Yang Zhao-yan) April 7, 115 (2026)
