The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced this morning that Chen Ming-chi met on the 8th with the "Canadian Federal Senator Delegation" led by Senator Leo Housakos, Leader of the Opposition in the Canadian Senate. Both sides exchanged views on deepening Taiwan-Canada economic and trade ties, healthcare cooperation, indigenous exchanges, and countering foreign information manipulation (FIMI).
Chen Ming-chi expressed gratitude for Canada's firm support for Taiwan in recent years. Since Canada released its Indo-Pacific Strategy in 2022, it has continued to deepen cooperation with Taiwan in areas such as health, trade, technology, and combating disinformation.
Chen Ming-chi emphasized that Taiwan and Canada's industries are highly complementary, and future opportunities for cooperation can be explored in fields such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, communications resilience, and energy security. He expressed hope for continued deepening of bilateral relations.
Housakos stated that Taiwan and Canada share values such as democracy and human rights, making them important partners. This visit is the first for most of the delegation members, and they hope to gain a deeper understanding of Taiwan's soft power, diversified economic and trade policies, public health system, indigenous rights protection, and efforts to counter disinformation.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs mentioned that Taiwan is Canada's second-largest investment partner and sixth-largest trading partner in the Asia-Pacific region, with close bilateral economic and trade relations. In recent years, Canada has also continued to demonstrate its determination to maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait through concrete actions. The government will continue to deepen exchanges and cooperation with Canada to create bilateral economic prosperity and jointly maintain peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
