Donald Trump has set a deadline of 8 PM US Eastern Time (8 AM on the 8th, Taiwan time) for Iran to agree to a deal, which must include reopening the Strait of Hormuz, otherwise the US will destroy most of Iran's civilian infrastructure, including all bridges and power plants.
Sarah Smith, BBC's North America editor, wrote that Trump has set similar deadlines in the past, but eventually made concessions and extended the timeframe.
Trump's latest social media post suggests he intends to stick to his deadline this time.
Smith analyzed that while Trump is never shy about using apocalyptic rhetoric when posting on social media, even by his standards, the threat today of 'an entire civilization will be destroyed tonight, and will never recover' is quite savage.
Regarding the possibility of devastating attacks on Iran, Trump wrote: "I don't want to see this happen, but it likely will."
Although Trump hinted in his post on his own social platform 'Truth Social' that the new leadership in Iran might agree to a deal, saying "Perhaps something revolutionary and good will happen, who knows?"
