Kuomintang (KMT) Chairwoman Zheng Li-wun met with General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party Xi Jinping today at the East Hall of the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Both Zheng Li-wun and Xi Jinping mentioned adhering to the political stance of the "1992 Consensus" and opposing Taiwan independence, and both sides spoke at length about the "Chinese nation."
A spokesperson for the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) responded to the Central News Agency, stating that the United States supports cross-strait dialogue and expects cross-strait differences to be resolved in a peaceful, non-coercive manner that is acceptable to the people on both sides of the strait.
The AIT spokesperson emphasized that meaningful cross-strait exchanges should focus on the leadership in Beijing and Taiwan's democratically elected government, conducting dialogue without preconditions and incorporating the participation of all political parties in Taiwan.
